Xbox Secures Exclusive GTA 6 Streaming Rights

(Wednesday October 07, 2026 @11:00AM (BeauHD) from the stream-now-own-later dept.)

Microsoft has reportedly [1]secured exclusive cloud-streaming rights for Grand Theft Auto VI , meaning Xbox Cloud Gaming will be the only service able to stream the game at launch. "Rockstar Games still hasn't announced a PC version of Grand Theft Auto VI, so this deal will allow Xbox to market its Xbox Cloud Gaming service to PC players who would otherwise need an Xbox Series X / S or PS5 console," reports The Verge. From the report:

> News of the streaming rights comes around a month after Microsoft announced some [2]major changes to Xbox Cloud Gaming . From November, the same month Grand Theft Auto VI releases, Microsoft is limiting streaming hours to just 15 hours for Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscribers, 10 hours for Premium subscribers, and just five hours for Game Pass Essential. Microsoft is also opening up access to Xbox Cloud Gaming with a pay-as-you-go option next month, rather than being limited to Game Pass subscriptions. The pay-as-you-go option is perfectly timed for Grand Theft Auto VI, allowing those who don't own an Xbox, or who primarily play from a phone, to stream the game by paying for a bundle of hours.

I bought GTA V ages ago when it was new, and played through its single-player mission, which I really liked. I never spent a thought on playing "GTA V online", and am not interested in any "online-only" games. "GTA VI" would have been an obvious buy for me, had they not decided to go "online only", which immediately reduced my interest in this game to zero.

Funny for me to think that some people may even be willing to pay-per-use for this games, aka "streaming games". Also funny how clear of an indication t

There is a [1]single player campaign [reddit.com] that you can play offline (if you have an Xbox or PlayStation), so not sure what your point is?

I don't own either, so for me it's great news, it will be my only way to play at launch.

That tweet you refer to is three months old, and very outdated, as Rockstar has meanwhile stated they will not sell Xbox or PS5 discs. And that means Xbox will not even start GTA VI offline, even if the single-player game as such could possibly run offline, because there is no disc to "authenticate your ownership" to the Xbox, so it will attempt to reach some remote server to look at your "account".

Since [1]Xbox cloud gaming switched to hourly limits per month [slashdot.org], I'm wondering how much Microsoft is paying for this "exclusive right". Having to pay for extra hours beyond the meager 5, 10, or 15 MONTHLY hours the plans currently give means Microsoft might be able to make more money than Rockstar when the game is finally released.

Makes much more sense than the original article now. I mean why would Rockstar sign an "exclusive" deal with the pitiful rest of what once was a console business? And Microslop certainly would not want to pay the enormous amounts of money such a deal would require from them to convince Rockstar, given that they cut costs everywhere around their ex-console-business.

It would have been more believable if a company like NVidia hat signed such a deal to promote their "streaming" service.
