If everybody was sacked for making a bad prediction, nobody would ever have a job.

I wouldn't go that far. It was a technological research project. The failure was not recognizing it wasn't ready for commercial release.

Since obviously at least a few people have bought into that retcon, it's obvious Apple's PR team is doing an effective job!

That was a failure, but the first failure was not recognizing it wasn't ready for a research project either. When they realized it was going to have to be heavy and bulky, they should have stopped and either iterated the design again, or smarter IMO, waited for tech to improve (or push it) and then done another design. OTOH Apple can afford to lose the money...

If it were a larger, less targeted set of folks I would have questions. But it sounds like they are niche folks with special skills. They're probably paid in the higher range. Apple could probably find places in the company for them, but probably not roles as well compensated. So overpay them or package them out. Overpaying has consequences, including upsetting peers. Packaging is cleaner.
Lot of assumptions in that... but when your employee base is something like 165,000 this isn't exactly a cull.

You have no clue if you think they dont. The M5 max GPU is roughly as fast as a laptop 5080. If you want either pro apps, or AI ability, the M5 isnâ(TM)t beaten by anything at all.
