EU Delays New Biometric Travel Checks as IT Systems Not Up To Speed (usnews.com)

(Thursday October 10, 2024 @05:20PM (msmash) from the tough-luck dept.)

The European Union has delayed the introduction of a new biometric entry-check system for non-EU citizens, which was due to be introduced on Nov. 10, after Germany, France and the Netherlands said [1]border computer systems were not yet ready . From a report:

> "Nov. 10 is no longer on the table," EU Home Affairs Commissioner Ylva Johansson told reporters. She said there was no new timetable, but that the possibility of a phased introduction was being looked at. The Entry/Exit System (EES) is supposed to create a digital record linking a travel document to biometric readings confirming a person's identity, removing the need to manually stamp passports at the EU's external border. It would require non-EU citizens arriving in the Schengen free-travel area to register their fingerprints, provide a facial scan and answer questions about their stay.

I wonder if/when this will be hacked in the near future? The USA's entry system that does similar scanning surprisingly hasnt yet had a hack/data loss (that we're aware).

Theyve only done it to copy the USA. Von de leyen blathering on about it securing the EUs borders is just farcical given the thousands of undocumented African and middle eastern migrants migrants rocking up on italy and Spain's shores literally every week. It's a beaurocrats wet dream that will simply make internation travel more awkward and risk a huge potential data breach long term.

LOL I love seeing just how much you can talk out of your arse.

a) They aren't copying the USA. The USA system is rubbish and the process for using it is fundamentally different.

b) You're complaining about undocumented migration and criticising someone raising a potential solution in the same sentence... well... yeah, that's literally how this works. You have problem (tracking migrants), you look for solution to problem.

c) There's literally nothing awkward about this system, it's actually making the process f

What you're describing is pretty much the only practical and legal way to seek asylum in an EU country. The US migration system is actually a phone app: CBP One (available in Apple App and Google Play Store) [1]https://www.cbp.gov/about/mobi...
