Microslop stuffs AI photo restyling powers into OneDrive

(2026/03/24)

Microsoft is rolling out technology to transform OneDrive photos into AI-infused masterpieces. Or top up the bucket of slop, depending on your perspective.

The feature, called [1]AI Restyle , allows users to apply a range of styles to photos in OneDrive. Where users might once have been happy with contrast tweaks or lighting adjustments, Microsoft has gone further by adding the ability to create a new version of a photo using either a preset or a prompt.

Reckon your family photos would look better in anime style? Microsoft's OneDrive can now make your dreams come true.

[2]

The ability to [3]"Ghibli-fy" images with AI is not new. However, the functionality turning up in OneDrive - which means users can skip third-party services - is.

[4]

[5]

Microsoft is rolling the feature out to iOS and Android versions of the OneDrive application, and the web for users with a Microsoft 365 subscription. We asked the company whether processing is on-device or in Microsoft's cloud, but it has yet to respond.

If processing takes place in the cloud, users will need to consider where their data is going. Then again, if you're using OneDrive, that ship has already sailed.

The rollout is ongoing and will vary by region, according to Microsoft. "We're continuing to expand AI-powered photo experiences in OneDrive –bringing AI Restyle to additional platforms and investing in new editing capabilities that help you create with confidence while keeping your photos authentic."

The latest tweaks to OneDrive come after Microsoft mandated the service for users of its Clipchamp video editing application. [10]WindowsLatest noted that a requirement to synchronize videos to OneDrive had crept into the application.

[11]

Microsoft has added other photo editing features to OneDrive over the years. In 2021, the ability to crop and adjust the color and lighting of images [12]emerged . Given the company's obsession with AI, tools to create photo re-renderings using the technology are not surprising.

It is, however, up to customers if they want to use those tools to top up the bucket of AI slop using their own images. ®

Your photos are one schizophrenic Copilot episode away from you waking up to see it replaced all mouths with rusty trombones and chocolate starfishes on all your holiday snaps.

Re: Change

Brewster's Angle Grinder

People sometimes have nightmares about find themselves naked in public.

Now you can have nightmares about waking up and finding every photo of yourself have been nudified overnight by Copilot.

Total fail

Throatwarbler Mangrove

I've tried using Copilot for image editing, and it's fucking terrible. I'm incredibly happy that Microsoft is burning approximately the same amount of energy it would take to launch a starship to Alpha Centauri in order to force AI slop on the great unwashed. The only good thing about it is that they're continuing to publicly tarnish their reputation.

Re: Total fail

Cubbie Roo

Seems like every week there's yet another reason to never go back.

Doctor Syntax

It looks like the memo "We are reducing unnecessary Copilot entry points" hasn't arrived yet. Or is it a case of taking a long time to turn a super-tanker?

Reckon your family photos would look better…

Bebu sa Ware

I imagine a few families might find an embedded capability to to edit out their creepy uncle Arthur † from family snaps (especially following his conviction) a real draw.

† or Andrew.

Most people can do without the essentials, but not without the luxuries.
