Trump appoints Musk associate Brendan Carr as FCC chair

(2024/11/18)

The US Federal Communications Commission (FCC), an agency charged with regulating US media and communications, is about to get a new boss: current commissioner Brendan Carr.

Described by President-elect Trump as "a warrior for Free Speech," Carr was nominated to the FCC by Trump in 2017. On November 17, Trump said in a [1]statement : "I will now be designating him as permanent Chairman."

"He will end the regulatory onslaught that has been crippling America's Job Creators and Innovators, and ensure that the FCC delivers for rural America," Trump's statement continued.

[2]

After thanking Trump for the appointment, Carr [3]stated on Elon Musk's social media platform, X (formerly Twitter), that the FCC would be ending its promotion of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI), then posted a GIF of Javier Milei's infamous "Afuera" video, in which the Argentinian president removes the names of government agencies from a whiteboard.

[4]

[5]

Carr has also been a vocal supporter of Musk, who [6]offered his congratulations upon news of the appointment.

As well he might. The FCC [7]opted in January not to spend nearly a billion dollars over ten years on Musk's Starlink satellite constellation to provide broadband to rural areas, which enraged the billionaire. FCC Commissioner Carr chimed in at the time, criticizing the decision and others that he [8]claimed "gave federal agencies the green light to go after him [Musk]."

Carr's antipathy toward the current administration's rollout of high-speed internet connectivity and his promise to "ensure that the FCC delivers for rural America" suggests Musk's Starlink constellation could be in line for a more sympathetic hearing when Carr takes the reins.

Musk is also seeking FCC approval for the Starlink Direct-to-Cellular service, which was given temporary approval to restore mobile connectivity in parts of North Carolina following Hurricane Helene. Carr [13]thanked SpaceX for its efforts.

[14]

Carr's appointment might also concern Starlink's terrestrial rivals, which asked the FCC to [15]reject the SpaceX subsidiary's request for a waiver related to out-of-band emission limits over fears that the Direct-to-Cellular service would require a signal strength that would risk interference with existing cellphone services.

Those rivals have their own ideas for a space-based cellular broadband network, which began with a September launch of five AST SpaceMobile satellites. ®

Zelensky changed his tune and is willing to have a diplomatic solution to ending the war. the Biden government has decided they will funnel as much money as possible, before Trump gets in, to Ukraine and has authorised sending over NATO weaponry which requires NATO assets and NATO support to use to long range strike into Russia (aka making NATO attack Russia directly).

Biden going out with a bang! They said they'd never let Trump be president again, just didn't think they'd start WW3 to achieve this.

Trump is obviously surrounding himself with cronies and crooks who will do anything he says and kiss his feet while doing so.

I expect a repeat of the infamous Oval Office meeting where Trump sits and everyone else is standing at attention, waiting for his/her turn to lavish praise on His Trumpiness.

It's going to be a long four years - unless he croaks first.

Now the question is : what's better ? He finishes his mandate and dies in (relative) obscurity, or he dies during his presidency and gets the full Presidential burial ?

Re: what's better ?

Mentat74

Well... If Trump croaks you will get president J.D. Vance... I don't think that will be better for anyone...

Of course all the cronies and crooks will turn into a pack of hungry wolves and start eating each other...

`Lasu' Releases SAG 0.3 -- Freeware Book Takes Paves For New World Order
by staff writers

Helsinki, Finland, August 6, 1995 -- In a surprise movement, Lars
``Lasu'' Wirzenius today released the 0.3 edition of the ``Linux System
Administrators' Guide''. Already an industry non-classic, the new
version sports such overwhelming features as an overview of a Linux
system, a completely new climbing session in a tree, and a list of
acknowledgements in the introduction.
The SAG, as the book is affectionately called, is one of the
corner stones of the Linux Documentation Project. ``We at the LDP feel
that we wouldn't be able to produce anything at all, that all our work
would be futile, if it weren't for the SAG,'' says Matt Welsh, director
of LDP, Inc.
The new version is still distributed freely, now even with a
copyright that allows modification. ``More dough,'' explains the author.
Despite insistent rumors about blatant commercialization, the SAG will
probably remain free. ``Even more dough,'' promises the author.
The author refuses to comment on Windows NT and Windows 96
versions, claiming not to understand what the question is about.
Industry gossip, however, tells that Bill Gates, co-founder and CEO of
Microsoft, producer of the Windows series of video games, has visited
Helsinki several times this year. Despite of this, Linus Torvalds,
author of the word processor Linux with which the SAG was written, is
not worried. ``We'll have world domination real soon now, anyway,'' he
explains, ``for 1.4 at the lastest.''
