US Army should ditch tanks for AI drones, says Eric Schmidt

Speaking at the Future Investment Initiative in Saudi Arabia this week, [1]he said : "I read somewhere that the US had thousands and thousands of tanks stored somewhere," adding, "Give them away. Buy a drone instead."
Did we mention that Schmidt is the founder of a startup called White Stork that aims to develop AI-driven attack drones?
[2]
The former Google supremo's argument is that recent conflicts, such as the war in Ukraine, have demonstrated how "a $5,000 drone can destroy a $5 million tank."
[3]
[4]
In fact, even cheaper drones, similar to those commercially available for consumers, have been shown in footage on social media dropping grenades through the open turret hatch of tanks.
Schmidt, who was CEO of Google from 2001 to 2011, then executive chairman to 2015, and executive chairman of Alphabet to 2018, founded White Stork with the aim of supporting Ukraine's war effort. It hopes to achieve this by developing a low-cost drone that can use AI to acquire its target rather than being guided by an operator and can function in environments where GPS jamming is in operation.
[5]
Notably, Schmidt also served as chair of the US government's [6]National Security Commission on Artificial Intelligence (NSCAI), which advised the President and Congress about national security and defense issues with regard to AI.
Questions were being raised about the viability of modern battle tanks before the Ukraine war started, but with the Russian armed forces [7]losing an estimated 3,000 in the first 24 months of the fighting , some military experts think the era of tank warfare is over.
However, both Russia and Ukraine have yet to ditch their tanks, with the latter country continuing to ask for Western hardware to help in its fight. The UK is also spending £800 million (about $1 billion) to upgrade its aging Challenger 2 battle tanks to [8]Challenger 3 , which comes with a completely new turret and gun, among other enhancements.

Many modern tanks also sport active protection systems (APS) such as [13]Trophy , which can detect incoming threats and typically launch explosive projectiles to intercept them before they reach the tank. Various other potential countermeasures are said to be in development, including laser dazzlers to blind the drone's sensors.
Despite what Schmidt suggests, the US Army isn't expected to mothball its thousands of M1 Abrams in favor of drones just yet. Instead, it is likely to consider deploying both when called upon at some point.
[14]
"The cost of autonomy is falling so quickly that the drone war, which is the future of conflict, will get rid of eventually tanks, artillery, mortars," Schmidt predicted. ®

The idea of a system that is designed to kill without a human decision maker, or even with a human decision maker evaluating "AI"-generated advice, gives me the heebie jeebies.
Human operators obviously get it wrong all the time but this opens up a whole new world of wrong...
I'm all for it, actually... As long as they use the same technology trialled a while ago, in which the drone abandoned the mission and sought to kill its operator.
Dunning -Kruger
..says what?
How deviant
So, White Stork, they want to deliver cute little babies to ... war torn battlefields? But why???
(ahem, naming his company "Undertakers-Я-Us" might have been more appropriate, and scary, really ...)
Who wouldn't, in that role
Head of the Widget X maker says that the US Army would be much better off if they bought a bazillion Widget Xs from the Widget X maker company.
I mean, if I was that guy I'd be saying the same thing. Might be getting confused if the US Army is better off, or I'm better off but someone will be.
So....
...the war in the Ukraine has shown that cheap drones can blow up tanks.
So please buy my incredibly expensive drones instead.
Re: So....
You got it. The WSJ reported earlier this year that Ukraine was ditching US expensive in favor of DJI drones, and in fact the US was buying DJI drones to supply Ukraine. You have to wonder if some of those drones might have a backdoor that is hurting Ukraine. More subtle than Israels beepers but just as deadly.
So the first step is to develop consumer market for domestic drones - which is really hard and requires tariffs. And watch politically powerful players like the DoD try to carve exceptions for themselves to bypass those tariffs.
Eric Schmidt, a one man think tank...
Ditch Eric Schmidt. That is all.
