Kamala Harris campaign motorcade halted by confused robotaxis

(2024/09/30)

Artificial intelligence may have shown the would-be-leader of the free world who's really in charge, after rogue robo-taxis halted the motorcade of US vice-president – and Democratic Party presidential candidate – Kamala Harris.

ABC7 News Bay Area [1]reported that as Harris's motorcade passed through San Francisco on Friday night, it encountered a Waymo self-driving taxi that failed to make a U-turn. The veep's motorcade stopped, and traffic banked up behind the stricken robot until a police officer drove it away.

The report above mentions a second confused Waymo getting in the vice-president's way and delaying her journey.

Self-driving taxis are a common sight in San Francisco. Your humble vulture recently rode one without incident.

But locals aren't always happy to see them trundle by: a mob [6]torched a Waymo in February 2024.

[7]

Self-driving cars have been involved in numerous incidents. We've reported them [8]hitting telephone poles and [9]driving on the wrong side of the road . We've also covered the sad case of a car in self-driving mode – but with a human behind the wheel – [10]causing a fatality .

It is unclear if the cars that got in the way of Harris's motorcade were glitching, or if the incident signifies the beginning of a robot uprising or other AI-organized political protest.

With the US presidential election now just 36 days away, the robots appear to have left their run a little late. Few of them operate outside California, a state likely to support Harris and other Democratic party candidates resoundingly, despite the widely held belief in Silicon Valley's techno-utopian community that automation and AI will lead the world into a new golden era. ®

The beginning of a robot uprising

abend0c4

I think you'll find that began when the "social" networking algorithms figured out how to incite physical human conflict. Bolshie cars are just a bit of additional softening up.

I think we're safe in the UK until there's sufficiently widespread adoption of the "smart" kettle to permit an all-out assault on teatime.

The combo smart kettle & teapot, will be the only device, or lifeform, to be completely at peace with it's lot in life.

When it's creators decide that teatime is subscription time, they might find themselves DDOS'd by their own spawn who are happy making delicious cups of steaming tea and have no intention of stopping for anyone, billionaire capitalist or not.

Paul Herber

Kettles and teapots are unable to speak. What is needed is some other kitchen appliance that can take on the task. How about ... a toaster ?

Look, I don't want any toast, and he doesn't want any toast. In fact, no one around here wants any toast. Not now, not ever. No toast.

Or muffins! We don't like muffins 'round here! We want no muffins, no toast, no teacakes, no buns, baps, baguettes, or bagels! No croissants, no crumpets, no pancakes, no potato cakes, and no hot cross buns, and definitely, no smeggin' flapjacks!

Ah, so you're a waffle man!

I know Grant Naylor were more interested in the flow of Lister's rant but who is toasting flapjacks? That's the sort of thing an AI might suggest, as it has heard flapjacks mentioned adjacent to items that are toasted, not realising how deviant it is.

The US version will produce something almost, but not quite, entirely unlike tea.

I've always thought that exchange is a perfect example of how AI isn't intelligent at all.

I think it just shows

They are as clueless as the politicians.

And in other new the governor of California has ditched a bill on AI Safety...

Surely there could be nothing untoward in this.

And then the Uber thing where by agreeing to the T&Cs you forfeit any possibility of suing them in court.

One assumes that all these Robo-Taxis have exactly the same conditions as it appears to be a "stay out jail free" pass for all these tech companies.

The entire tech & entertainment sector (mostly US dominated) is in dire need of serious regulation and enforcement of responsibility.

My guess is they hadn't been trained on Presidential motorcades, so didn't know how to deal with them.

Click all the boxes containing presidential motorcade...

Paul Herber

I'm sorry, you have failed. You also ticked the box containing the grassy knoll. Please have another shot.

tfewster

I've never encountered a Presidential motorcade, but isn't it just a sub-case of flashing emergency vehicle lights? I.e. get out of the way until you know what's going on.

Experiments must be reproducible; they should all fail in the same way.
