Hubble Space Telescope hasn't had any visitors for 15 years

It is fifteen years since the Hubble Space Telescope was captured by a Space Shuttle for the final time.

By the time its final servicing mission, STS-125, arrived, Hubble Space Telescope (HST) had already been in orbit for 19 years. Following the [1]13-day mission , the HST continued to generate prodigious amounts of science while also suffering the occasional failure.

Space Shuttle Atlantis launched on May 11, 2009, from Kennedy Space Center's Launch Complex 39A. The HST was grappled by the Shuttle's arm on May 13, 2009, setting the scene for a mission requiring five spacewalks that scientists hoped would give the old thing another five years of operational life.

By the time Atlantis launched, the HST was ailing. The plan had been to launch in 2008, but a failure of Hubble's Science Instrument Command and Data Handling (SIC&DH) unit meant a swift rejig of the payload and a shift to 2009 to give engineers time to get a replacement ready for the mission. It would, after all, be the last time astronauts laid gloves on the observatory.

The mission was hectic. The first spacewalk replaced the failed SIC&DH unit, the Wide Field Camera, and added a Low Impact Docking System just in case a future spacecraft might need to dock with the Hubble. Subsequent spacewalks replaced the gyroscopes, batteries, and other instruments. Slightly alarmingly, one astronaut, Mike Massimino, had to use brute force to remove a handrail during a spacewalk to repair an instrument that had never been intended to be fixed on orbit.

The final servicing mission left Hubble in excellent health. So much so that it has far exceeded the initial estimates for the remainder of its operational life. However, nothing is forever, and Hubble is showing its age. It is down to three gyros, one of which is showing signs of [5]failure and the observatory's payload computer has [6]suffered the odd glitch or two.

While the [11]recent solar activity might have delighted earthbound observers with an impromptu light show in the night sky, it is also a stark reminder that, without a reboost, Hubble's orbital lifetime is limited. Hubble's orbit is decaying naturally, but the process can be accelerated by additional atmospheric drag.

Thanks to the final servicing mission, the HST is equipped with hardware to permit a rendezvous. However, despite proposals from SpaceX and other commercial operators, there is nothing in the schedule for reboosting Hubble or having the spacecraft re-enter the Earth's atmosphere in a controlled fashion.

The mission that almost never happened

Initially scheduled for around the end of 2005, the Hubble repair mission was canceled in 2004 by then-NASA Administrator Sean O'Keefe in the wake of the Columbia disaster.

The justification for the cancellation was simple. Following the Columbia accident, there needed to be a way to rescue a Space Shuttle crew if their vehicle could not make a safe return to Earth. For International Space Station (ISS) assembly and resupply missions, it wasn't a problem – but a mission to the HST afforded no such safe haven.

Yet following an outcry over the decision, NASA thought again. STS-125 was back on, although now scheduled for 2008, before being delayed to 2009, and a rescue mission, STS-400 (later STS-401 and then back to STS-400 once more,) was drawn up. Just in case.

STS-400 was thankfully never needed and would have required another Space Shuttle to be launched to rescue the HST servicing crew. It would also have resulted in an abrupt end to the Space Shuttle program.

As it was, just over two more years remained before the program came to an end in 2011. ®

I find it amazing that it has lasted this long. Congrats to the boffins, engineers etc. who built, maintained and run it, and, of course the astronauts who serviced it.

It's going to end up as another Skylab, where NASA dithers about a reboost mission past its ability to stay in orbit.

Sad.

I know its no longer the latest and greatest, but there's been a lot of money and time spent getting where it is, and a relatively cheap reboost could extend that.

Not sure about "not the latest and greatest", because AFAIK the JWST observes on different wavelengths (right?), so we have nothing that matches what Hubble can do at the moment up there. Down here is problematic, the atmosphere is too turbulent, and some people seem to insist that putting lots of sattelites in LEO is a good idea.

The cost isn't the reboost - it's supporting all the scientist working on the data.

You could, of course, reboost it but NOT fund anyone to actually use it -

Although we know have the James Webb in place it operates in the infra-red not visible spectrum. It is also not repairable due to it's L2 location.

A service mission would be a much lower cost than creating and launching Hubble II. It is a no-brainer that Hubble should be repaired until a major, and not repairable failure, occurs.

Some sod is putting a huge number of satellites in a higher orbit than Hubble. It's not just the ground based telescopes getting affected by light trails. We need it put above the musky crap.

It would be nice if Musk was to include a combined Hubble in-space service and orbital boost mission in one of the later manned SpaceShip test flights, but I'm not holding my breath, although it would be an excellent advert for SpaceX.

For that matter, is Hubble small and light enough for a SpaceX SpaceShip module to recover it for a full terrestrial service before putting it back up in a higher orbit than the swarm of LEO comms satellites? Something that can be configured to carry 100 colonists and their support gear to the Moon or Mars may have room enough to accommodate the Hubble.

At least that would save it from destruction by the coming debris shower when the next few swarms of LEO comms sats have been launched and started to collide, either accidentally or due to some Fearless Leader thinking that picking a few commsats off would be a good idea.

SpaceX only lands first stages. Hubble is in orbit. It takes a lot of fuel to get to orbit and then get out of orbit again, adding all this fuel and still having enough fuel left to land with a school bus on board is 'challenging'

They aren't taking about using a Falcon to do a retrieve mission. There is a rocket under development with a planned higher return payload capacity then shuttle had both for mass and volume.

The HST solar panels aren't designed to be folded away but I'm sure they can come up with a solutiom.

This video shows how hard it is to service Hubble. Its widely been published that Jared Isaacman is proposing using one of the Polaris mission to service hubble using Dragon capsule. Polaris 2 due to launch next month has a very basic EVA planned so at least they will have a better idea of what is going to be possible. Their planned EVA is 2 hours which is a fraction of what will be needed for a hubble mission. The suit only has mobility in arms, not waist or legs so there is likely more development needed there. Who knows but as Jared says, if nothing else gets approved then what have they got to lose ?
