Big Cloud is still making bank – Is this AI adoption, price rises, or what?

(2024/04/27)

Kettle This week a chunk of Big Tech reported its latest quarterly financial figures, and our beady eyes were on whether the ongoing AI obsession will pay off for these mega corporations.

Alphabet and Microsoft [1]revealed soaring profits and sales. Atlassian's revenues were [2]also up and it turned a modest profit. IBM [3]squeaked in a sales increase as well as net income growth. Adjacent to this, Meta ran into [4]trouble by saying it'll take a while for its AI efforts to become profitable, and Intel saw its stock price [5]fall , too.

What does this mean for the IT world? As you can watch below, our vultures break it down. For this [6]Kettle episode, we have our systems editor Tobias Mann, the ever-sharp Brandon Vigliarolo, editor Chris Williams, and host Iain Thomson.

Silver lining: there's probably great opportunities there for iRobot and Boston Dynamics to develop autonomous car cleaning robots, and night-time charge-plug connecting humanoids, for one's private Tesla autonomous participative off-hours cybercab vehicle (eg. automated car wash for the passenger compartment) ... innovative flamethrower attachments could also come in real handy for thorough sanitation against the toughest stains! These are obliviously the growing AI business of the future in which to invest right now (rather than the ground-floor usual suspects, IMHO + straitjackets)!

Obviously, a man's judgement cannot be better than the information on which he
has based it. Give him the truth and he may still go wrong when he has
the chance to be right, but give him no news or present him only with
distorted and incomplete data, with ignorant, sloppy or biased reporting, with
propaganda and deliberate falsehoods, and you destroy his whole reasoning
processes, and make him something less than a man.
