IBM Japan and NTT think they can make datacenter aircon adjust to different workloads

Their technique uses temperature sensors placed around a datacenter – an approach that means servers don't need to be reconfigured to produce useful data about the heat they produce.
The two orgs tested their tech in Japan last year, in NTT Comware's own datacenter, and found a strong correlation between exhaust heat temperature and power consumption.

Because this is 2024, that correlation was found with the help of a machine learning model that neither party has detailed. The Register imagines at the very least the model will need to take into account the by-design temperature differences found around a datacenter, and perhaps also be able to infer that a large hot server is full of large hot GPUs.

The pair are productizing their efforts, through Big Blue's Maximo asset management software.
Among the features the partners hope to deliver is precise control of air conditioning systems based on an understanding of servers' collective power consumption.

Datacenter operators are the target for this tech and it's not hard to see why: cooling is one of their major costs and they need to provide enough of it to keep all tenants' kit humming at full capacity.
While servers can report on their performance, isolation and privacy are the foundation of datacenter hosting services. Sniffing the wind to gather the data needed to optimize cooling therefore offers datacenter operators a chance to improve their operations without scaring customers, potentially reducing costs … and maybe passing those savings on to tenants.

Even if that doesn't happen, power savings that reduce CO 2 emissions will be widely welcomed.
IBM and NTT expect that their efforts could also be used to create more efficient hardware and software.
A demo of the tech in action is on offer in IBM's new Japanese HQ in Toranomon Hills Station Tower. Cherry blossoms will start blooming there in a few weeks – another reason for a visit. ®

"Inverter" chillers use variable-frequency drives to vary the power output, these have been common for at least 20 years ...

I had kind of assumed it was variable but yeah the writing is just bad. Like bad in its execution and bad in its premise if this is already a thing and couldn't explain or reference other systems for comparison.

Duhhh.
You need to track humidity as well as it does make a difference in efficiency.
Power consumed:
Cooling system (including air handling)
Wiring loss (depends on bean counter involvement)
Servers and other appliances
Network gear
Lights
Power switch gear / contact points. (Breakers, plug connectors, and transformers -never to be allowed in a Datacenter)
Power factor.
UPS and battery losses.
And wall warts.
If you use a FLIR unit and look at your rack and power Pannels for hotspots, you will find a massive loss from wall warts.
There needs to be a study on which is more efficient, 120v, 208v or in some cases 480v.
Power factor is another efficiency item. Run in 3ph, the best. Worst is 120v. Without correction you can loose as much as 20% or more. Reading the temperature at the rack would at best only give a reference.

So the heat produced by a server is directly proportional to the power it consumes - and they needed AI to tell them THAT!!

You can treat basically all electrical devices as close to 100% efficient heaters. All the energy has to go somewhere. Whether it's a gpu or cpus it's all ends up as heat in the end. A tiny amount will leave in the network cables, but still ends up as heat in the next device.
AC works by transferring the heat to a medium, pumping it elsewhere and releasing it. Convientiently it can move more units of heat than it consumed.
I had always just assumed that ac dynamically scaled with the workload. There have been temp probes in every dc I hadn't been in. Why was thier not done from the start?
IBM has zero clue about datacentres, all they know how to do is shut them down.
Talk to almost any other datacentre provder if you want to know about ASHRAE and PUE.
