AI to detect heart attacks tested in the land of the deep-fried Mars bar

Heart attacks can be difficult to detect because symptoms like chest pain, dizziness, or shortness of breath are associated with many other conditions. Physicians often miss other vital signs. If left untreated, there's as much as a 70 percent chance you'll die from an attack in the next 30 days, the British Heart Foundation (BHF) said.
The AI system being tested appears to be able to "rule out a heart attack in more than double the number of patients, with an accuracy of 99.6 percent," the not-for-profit org suggested.

The charity helped fund the research and development of [5]CoDE-ACS (Collaboration for the Diagnosis and Evaluation of Acute Coronary Syndrome) tool to diagnose heart attacks. The system, powered by machine-learning algorithms, predicts the likelihood patients are suffering from a heart attack.
CoDE-ACS analyzes a patient's age, sex, medical history, inspects electrocardiogram data, and uses a blood test to look for troponin – a protein that appears when heart muscles are damaged – to calculate a score out of 100. Higher scores mean there is a higher chance of heart attack. The researchers believe that the algorithm can sort out whether some people checking into A&E with symptoms are really having heart attacks or not, allowing physicians to identify those more at risk more quickly.

"For patients with acute chest pain due to a heart attack, early diagnosis and treatment saves lives," explained Nicholas Mills, professor of Cardiology at the Centre for Cardiovascular Science at the University of Edinburgh, who led the research [7]published in Nature .
"Unfortunately, many conditions cause these common symptoms, and the diagnosis is not always straight forward. Harnessing data and artificial intelligence to support clinical decisions has enormous potential to improve care for patients and efficiency in our busy Emergency departments."

CoDE-ACS was trained on data from over 10,000 patients who were admitted to a hospital in Scotland with a suspected heart attack.
The technology is being trialed, again in Scotland, to see if it can improve care in Accident and Emergency departments, the BHF said.
"If adopted in practice, the CoDE-ACS clinical decision support system could reduce time spent in emergency departments, prevent unnecessary hospital admission in patients unlikely to have myocardial infarction and at low risk of cardiac death, and improve the recognition and treatment of those with myocardial infarction rather than myocardial injury, with benefits for both patients and health care providers," the study concluded. ®

And they are using the ECG as one of the inputs to the ML system. Which will probably give them a very good chance of spotting issues before it's visually obvious in just one of those inputs, even to an experienced observer.

And the troponin test they've been using for years down here.... as I've found out along with several friends.. needle in the arm soon as can be done....and await attatchment of the ECG leads

I blame the American Upper Midwest (Minnesota, Iowa, Wisconsin, N./S. Dakota) with their overly indulgent "state fairs" [1]. They'll deep-fry just about anything [2].
[1] Coincidentally, yesterday was "Statehood Day" for Minnesota [3].
[2] My personal favorite at the Minn. State Fair -- at least in hindsight -- was the Pronto Pup: a corn dog using not cornmeal but wheat-based pancake batter, so it fries up extra thick and they have to use a full-round dowel, not those weak, flat sticks. I've lived in Michigan for a while (18 years [4]) and need to take my kids to "The Great Minnesota Get-Together" if only so my son gets a Pronto Pup.

Evidence please
There is no link to the BHF statement of 70% risk of death in 30 days if untreated.
I can find nothing in the scientific literature to support this.
There is nothing on their website that supports this that I can find.
It does not pass the sniff test.

Cost efficiency
I often find that visiting a general practitioner, even a specialist, is a waste of time and money. It would be more cost-efficient to go directly to diagnostics, provided it was cheaper. AI could help a lot.
Not Easy but possible
Heart Attacks are normally fairly easy to observe when you get a decent EKG recording, basically just monitor the electrical heart muscle contractions, they are quite complex but looking at the baseline level changes with the "p", "QRS" and T-waves will give you a good diagnosis of a potential heart attack or other issues. So all you need to do is look at their heartbeats for a few minutes once you have some EKG interpretation experience (mine's about 40 years now, because that's how I started electronics).
