According to a memo dispatched this week, colleagues in Kirkland, Washington; New York City; San Francisco, Seattle; and Sunnyvale California were told about the change.
“Most Googlers will now have to share a desk with one other Googler,” said the memo, seen by [1]CNBC . Staff will not be expected to sit at the same desk on the same day, Google added. “Through the matching process, they will agree on a basic desk setup and establish norms with the desk partner and team to ensure a positive experience in the new shared environment.”
[2]
The desk share plan is being referred to by management as Cloud Office Evolution, “combining the best of pre-pandemic collaboration with the flexibility” of mixed working at home and in the office.

This is all a far cry from image Google [5]worked hard to create of a business that lavished its employees with perks including on-site massage therapy, free meals and cookery classes, on-site gyms and much, much more.
The tone changed last month when Google confirmed it was expunging circa [6]12,000 workers that it had hired in the early years of the pandemic and could no longer justify on the payroll, given the dramatic downturn in results.
[7]
For calendar 2022, Google parent Alphabet reported revenue of $282.8 billion, up 10 percent and markedly slower than the double digit growth posted in prior years. Net income plunged to $59.9 billion from $76 billion.

In an [13]earnings call , CFO Ruth Porat confirmed the organization expects to incur roughly $500 million in costs connected to “exiting leases to align our office space with our adjusted global headcount outlook. This will be reflected in corporate costs. We continue to optimize our real estate footprint.”
Turnover generated by Google Cloud remains some distance behind Microsoft and AWS globally, although it is way ahead of the fourth largest public cloud provider. In [14]Q4 , Google Cloud’s revenue went up to $7.3 billion from $5.54 billion.
In a statement, Google told The Register : “Since returning to the office, we’ve run pilots and conducted surveys with Cloud employees to explore different hybrid work models and help shape the best experience.
“Our data show Cloud Googlers value guaranteed in-person collaboration when they are in the office, as well as the option to work from home a few days each week. With this feedback, we’ve developed our new rotational model, combining the best of pre-pandemic collaboration with the flexibility and focus we’ve all come to appreciate from remote work, while also allowing us to use our spaces more efficiently.”
[15]
When we asked Google if the model would be coming to the rest of its locations, it told us it would be limited to the five locations in the US. ®

Calling Neil Simon!
This will work out well for a reboot of "The Odd Couple".
There's now way in hell I (c)(w)(sh)ould share a desk. Everyone is either too messy or too clean!
Share a desk ?
No problem, I'll gladly work from home.
For the same pay, of course, I'm not responsible for your mismanagement.
What's that ? You hired 12,000 people during the pandemic and couldn't guess that, when it was over, things would at least go back to pre-pandemic ?
Aren't you supposed to be smart ?
Google Aircraft Fleet
Any cost cutting/saving on that front?
That would of course effect the executives
Hey we want you back in the office...
....but we don't have enough office space for you come back to.
Maybe they should Bing "Work from home".
Warm desking
Still nope.
Re: Warm desking
Which is worse? Hot desking or warm lavatory seating?
Free message therapy?
Is that an SMS therapist or a chatbot?
Re: Free message therapy?
It's character building
Office
Everyone has to come to office! Pronto! No more work from home!!!
*mark comes to office*
Mark: Where is my desk?
Manager: Here is Paul, he is going to be your desk mate for the day.
*Paul unwraps a tuna sandwich*
Paul: Hi I am Paul *a sweetcorn fall out of his mouth*, I take the east side of the desk.
Mark: NOPE!
*Mark grabs his stuff and leaves home*
Re: Office
Cram the worker drones in... I experienced that at **. It is a perfect way to get people to vote with their feet and leave. No severance/redundancy... Kerching. Bigger Bonuses for the bosses.
cynical? You betcha...
Cloud Office Evolution
AKA hotdesking. That worked really well for everyone who's tried it in the past, right? Well, for the managers, at least; they tended to build their own little empires at the same desk every day. Everyone else, not so well.

So much bullshit in so few words - it's really quite impressive how they manage it!
and establish norms with the desk partner
Random person in the pub: Hey what do you do for living?
Google staffer: I am a desk partner at Google!
Random person in the pub: Whoaaa, shall we go to yours or mine?
"You pay for my time" does not mean "you pay for me to be miserable for a set number of hours per week". This is not the kind of thing that companies should be able to get away with when they are posting healthy profits.
American Capitalism - Greed
Profit of $59.9 billion in a year. Apparently that's so bad they need to sack 12,000 people and make people share desks. Ridiculous to say the least.
Ultimate Google desk partner
Sundar Pichai
My heart bleeds
Not!
Google is an evil company... end of. We have to tolerate them but they just want to rape us of out data and lives.
