What you need to know about the real-time capable edition of Ubuntu 22.04

The new real-time edition was [1]announced on Valentine's Day [insert joke about loving a more responsive computer here]. The beta version [2]appeared last year, a couple of months after the launch of 22.04 "Jammy Jellyfish" that April. The difference from standard Ubuntu is that this version integrates the out-of-tree [3]PREEMPT_RT patches into kernel 5.15.
Canonical will shortly hold an online [4]seminar to explain the new product.

This new edition follows [6]Intel's acquisition of the real-time kernel developers Linutronix in February last year. This resulted in new investment into the pre-emptible kernel project, whose first patches went into [7]kernel 2.5.4 in 2009. Now bigger results are appearing, and they're not limited to Intel processors or even to x86: there is also an Aarch64 version of Real-time Ubuntu. For now, the PREEMPT_RT patches are not part of the mainline kernel, although Intel is working to get them included soon – so Ubuntu is pushing the technology curve a little here.

In one way, the timing is a little unfortunate for Canonical: the second update to Jammy, version 22.04.2, is [10]expected next week, and that will have kernel 5.19 from Ubuntu 22.10. This means that if you opt for Real-time Ubuntu, your systems will be held back to the older kernel version. That isn't a big problem, though: as we covered when it was released, [11]kernel 5.15 is a LTS release and its projected end-of-life date isn't until October.
For now, the different kernel is the main difference. This isn't a new flavor or remix or anything: it's the same Ubuntu (Desktop, Server, or Core) but with a different kernel built with the RT patches. All you need is an Ubuntu Pro subscription, which, as we've covered, [12]has been free for single users with up to five machines since last October.

Just the kernel won't make your machine suddenly real-time. The company told us:
It is important to understand a real-time kernel on its own will not necessarily make a system real-time. The rest of the hardware and configuration has to be set up for it. It takes careful understanding and tuning of the overall real-time stack, from the underlying silicon to the operating system, to the networking layer, and applications.

Our first thought was that if you're not building 5G base stations or something, an obvious use of this might be Ubuntu Studio, the special edition for creatives which includes music composition and sequencing tools. Ubuntu Studio uses the existing [18]low-latency kernel , and as it happens, in 2020 the Ubuntu Studio project actually [19]warns against RT kernels:
For desktop computer usage, using a real-time kernel can cause security nightmares.
You may also see issues if you need proprietary drivers that need kernel modules – there are known [20]issues with the Nvidia binary graphics drivers, for instance.
While this is good to see, and despite the long history of the development of the real-time kernel, we'd suggest holding back for now, unless you have an urgent need for real-time support – and keeping Real-time Ubuntu away from general-purpose desktops and servers. ®

The key question maybe?
How real is "real time"? We need some objective criterion (or more probably a set of objective criteria for defined use caes).

Real time does not mean that it responds quickly but that the time is deterministic. The OS provides guarantees that an event will be processed before a time limit is reached.
It is not something that you would want in a general purpose desktop.

It is something you want if you're doing serious audio work, especially with virtual instruments. Linux 2.6 with the RT patches + JACK is still the best system I've ever used for that purpose. The "lowlatency" kernel was no better than the standard one. Agree about having to carefully tune it though, I used to build my own. Not sure I could be bothered with all that any more.

Exactly. But what we need is some objective OS-independent standards against which to compare the real time offerings. However that could be hard to achieve. I've done quite a bit of experimentation in getting Java to operate real time, albeit within quite loose criteria (c. 50 milliseconds), and the biggest problem has been consistency when transferring between different hardware rather than variability on any given platform.

It's the guarantee that's key, not the limit.
The fast system you developed is not "real time" because it's not deterministic (hmm, is any Garbage Collecting system deterministic?)
We don't need "OS-independent standards" because Operating Systems are either Real Time or not, and no matter how fast things go in the latter case it never qualifies as the former.

So a system which guarantees that the garbage collection will complete by the end of the quarter is by defn. Hard Real Time

Just a note to add that 5.15 LTS has now been extended to Oct 2026, with 5.10 and 6.1 also running to late 2026.
Nothing new in "Real Time" Unix...
... Massachusetts Computer Corporation (Masscomp) (later merged with Concurrent Computer Corp) had it in the early 1980s on 68k hardware.... ("RTU" - which was a System V derivative)

I know I don't need Canonical any more! Not after the "let's put ads in the command line tools" debacle right now. It's their O/S and they're welcome to whatever the heck makes them happy, just don't be surprised if people decide to migrate off to someone else's distro.
