No more free API access, says Twitter: You pay for that data

"Starting February 9, we will no longer support free access to the Twitter API, both v2 and v1.1. A paid basic tier will be available instead," Twitter's developer account [1]said this morning.
Claiming its dataset is "among the world's most powerful," Twitter said it was committed to enabling "fast and comprehensive access" to devs wishing to create features and apps linked to the social media platform or draw on its data, more details of which would be shared next week.
[2]
That's all the Elon Musk-owned company had to say on the matter, so now it's up to those who still have Twitter API access – researchers, data scientists and the like – to determine how they'll cope with the loss of access to data necessary to their work.
[3]
[4]
Paid Twitter API access has previously been available for those with heavy use needs.
Welcome to the club
App developers who used Twitter's API had a similar rude awakening on January 14 when Twitter killed a number of third-party clients with [5]no official word as to why. Justification came later, on January 17, when Twitter said it was beginning to enforce "long-standing API rules" that didn't appear in the site's developer agreement for another couple of days.
On January 19, the developer agreement was [6]updated to add language making it against the terms of the deal to use Twitter's APIs "to create or attempt to create a substitute or similar service or product to the Twitter Applications."
Anything else going wrong over there we should know about?
Elon Musk appears to be resorting – publicly, at least – to troubleshooting Twitter platform problems with his own anecdotal experiments.
The Twitter/SpaceX/Tesla CEO yesterday responded to tweets alleging that accounts set to private were somehow getting a greater reach than when set to public – even for the same tweet.
Musk made his account private "to test whether you see my private tweets more than my public ones," and around 24 hours later reversed the setting, [7]adding that the move "helped identify some issues" that would be addressed by next week.
It's unclear what the issue actually was, but it lays bare the depths of challenges Twitter is experiencing right now, with rumors swirling that [8]fewer than 550 engineers remain at the company.
Several popular third-party Twitter applications, like Iconfactory's Twitterrific and Tapbots' Tweetbot, have been discontinued by their developers in response. Others that remain working, like TweetDeck wrapper Tweeten, have [9]expressed solidarity with developers affected by the decision and have said they're unlikely to continue updating the app.
Iconfactory cofounder Gedeon Maheux told The Register that, while it looks like Twitter learned from the "debacle of just switching off third-party access," it's but a tiny improvement for the "thousands of developers out there" who are still going to find themselves without access.
Maheux said he wasn't surprised Twitter decided to remove free API access, but he was still upset. "Twitter has thousands of outside developers who have built useful tools, games, and analytics on the platform that will now all have to be scrapped," Maheux told us.

[13]Musk: Tesla's doing great. I mean, have you seen my Twitter follower count?
Cutting off API access looks like it's just the latest in Musk's attempts to turn Twitter profitable. The billionaire is curretly facing lawsuits accusing him of leaving the company's [14]bills unpaid , while late last year one of his first moves as boss was to make verification checkmarks [15]available for $8 a month , causing a spate of [16]brand impersonations from which it's [17]unclear the company has recovered.
As to whether the move will make Twitter money, that's not clear at all. Maheux doesn't appear to believe so, and said Twitter is squandering what good will remains between the platform and developers.
[18]
"Few if any of these small devs will be able to afford the kinds of access they had prior which will only speed Twitter's eventual self destruction," Maheux opined.

If anyone actually wants to continue,... please be sure to have understood #1 too. You may want to reconsider.

Re: Rules of Acquisition!
Elon should have consulted #3.
They just did this in the wrong order
Why in the name of Christ did they not announce that the API would be going paid, then discontinue the free tier 2 months later or something? People would have been unhappy, but "our business isn't profitable so we need more revenue streams" is at least a good argument. Instead they get to look like massive disorganized dicks, with the same end situation. Good job.
Re: They just did this in the wrong order
Pretty difficult to not look like disorganized dicks when it's run by one with a "my way or highway" attitude to rival Steve Jobs. At least Jobs was organized.
Re: They just did this in the wrong order
True, but I'm trying to look at this from the tactical scale rather than the strategic one. I'm quite sure at a high level, either Elon is truly nuts or his running of twitter is part of some kind of scam.
Re: They just did this in the wrong order
This is going to backfire spectacularly. My bro in law used to used a Twitter bot to make posts over the weekend etc, to advertise his business, special offers, discount codes, give aways etc. Things like that drive traffic to Twitter, it's then up to Twitter to monetize the traffic, adverts etc. They are monetizing the wrong end, and will just drive people to other platforms like Tik Tok . Twitter will become less useful, and die. Well done Elon, you legendary futureman.
Re: They just did this in the wrong order
Twitter will become less useful, and die
Well that *IS* his aim, since they forced him to buy it.
Re: They just did this in the wrong order
And to think, it's only taken $44 billion...
Re: Well that *IS* his aim,
His aim right now is Chapter 11. He has huge debt payments coming due. Going to Chapter 11 will kick them to the curb.
I have to admit that he has learned a lot from his master No45. How many times has he put his companies into Chapter 11 just to escape the creditors?
Trump may well be about to go bankrupt again just to piss off the NY AG and everyone else he owes money to. Why else would he dispute in court, the existence of 'The Trump Organisation' if he didn't already have the papers for Chapter 11 on his desk eh?
Re: Well that *IS* his aim,
The question is if he's actually permitted to go Chapter 11 - there's a bit too much evidence he was aiming for it which may invalidate the protection that Chapter 11 affords. In addition, doesn't Chapter 11 require you to prove future viability? As far as I can tell, that evidence is still very much missing..
Not an expert, so I may have this wrong
Re: They just did this in the wrong order
Nobody forced him, in tennis this would have been called an unforced error.
In real life it's called being an utter moron, and that's only news to his fans.
Claiming its dataset is "among the world's most powerful,"
That's not really a good sales argument after you have been shedding advertisers and users left, right and centre and have only amplified the amount of hate slushing around.
I'd say charging for the API is the best way to lose all that free marketing as well as the originally supporting eco system. Why would someone pay for access to something that is heading for bankruptcy quicker than a Tesla self-immolates?
Rules of Acquisition!
It seems like we now in a Ferengi world! It costs you just to see the taxman! Brunt is that you?
