European Parliament Putin things back together after cyber attack

(2022/11/24)

The European Parliament has experienced a cyber attack that started not long after it declared Russia to be a state sponsor of terrorism.

The Parliament on Wednesday passed a [1]resolution that details Russia's illegal invasion of Ukraine, weighs international definitions of terrorism, and โ€“ over nine pages and 4250 words โ€“ concludes that Russia is a state sponsor of terrorism.

Not long after the resolution passed, this happened:

๐ŸšจThe availability of [2]@Europarl_EN website is currently impacted from outside due to high levels of external network traffic.

This traffic is related to a DDOS attack (Distributed Denial of Service) event.

EP teams are working to resolve this issue as quickly as possible. โ€” Jaume Duch (@jduch) [3]November 23, 2022

The president of the Parliament, Roberta Metsola, explained the incident as follows:

The [4]@Europarl_EN is under a sophisticated cyberattack. A pro-Kremlin group has claimed responsibility.

Our IT experts are pushing back against it & protecting our systems.

This, after we proclaimed Russia as a State-sponsor of terrorism.

My response: [5]#SlavaUkraini โ€” Roberta Metsola (@EP_President) [6]November 23, 2022

The attack appears to have made part of the Parliament's website inoperable and made access impossible for a few hours.

A pro-Russian group called KILLNET appears to have claimed responsibility for the attack in this slightly NSFW [7]Telegram post .

KILLNET is a plausible source of the attack. It is known to have used DDoS attacks on government websites โ€“ including [12]trying to take out US government sites earlier this month.

Whatever the source, the IT team sorted things out. The Parliamentary website is once more available to the world โ€“ and the illegal invasion of Ukraine, and accompanying atrocities, continues. ยฎ

Poke the Bear and get a reaction

Bubba Von Braun

Seems Vlad the Impotent has resorted to DDOS attacks after being called out by EU parliament.

I would have thought a rousing speech full of threats and condemnation and thumping of a lectern, followed by storming off stage right would have been just as effective.

Makes one wonder if Tanks are not the only thing they are running out of..

It's not like the old days. Those old school Soviets like Khruschev really knew how to pontificate at the West.

Brain as on option

Potemkine!

Those Kremlin supporters are soooo stupid. They just demonstrate that they are indeed thugs, trying to scare people to force them to do what those scumbags want. Yes, that's akin to terrorism.

I hope our politicians won't never ever bind to Putin. One Munich conference was enough.

Oh we must have some Putin love children in the house

Or maybe spray?

The words "impotent tantrum" come to mind. How sad.

Yup, that's a fair way to describe the EU. Yey! Ursula Von Der Liar gets to look stern making a statement socking it to da man! Meanwhile, the EU (and UK) continues their steady collapse.

The only effect this action will have is to give the EU parliament some sort of illusion of relevance, and making that bunch of wankers feel important. If all the MEPs failed to turn up for 5 years, it would have less impact than a Philosopher's Strike.

Victory or defeat!
