Mozilla Foundation launches ethical venture capital fund

(2022/11/04)

Mozilla has announced the successor to the Mozilla Builders incubator: Mozilla Ventures.

Mozilla defined the project [1]in a post as an investment fund for early-stage internet startups that Mozilla feels align with the [2]Mozilla Manifesto . The fund will officially open next year, but has already made some preliminary investments.

The news came from Mozilla executive director [3]Mark Surman , and the new fund will be run by Mohamed Nanabhay, previously [4]senior advisor at the Media Development Investment Fund. The new fund succeeds 2020's [5]Mozilla Builders program, which [6]apparently "invested in 80+ people, projects, and technologies reshaping the internet."

[7]

The initial pot of $35 million will go towards "seed to series A startups… whose products or technologies advance… values… like privacy, inclusion, transparency, and human dignity."

[8]

[9]

Some backing has already been given to three new companies: [10]Block Party , [11]heylogin , and [12]Secure AI Labs .

The investments will be guided by partner company [13]Lucid Capitalism . Even so, like any investment fund, this is essentially a gamble. As for the companies it has backed so far, heylogin offers a passwordless authentication tool, a sort of password manager without a master password, while SAIL offers a tool to pool and query clinical results from medical trials in multiple hospitals while preserving patient confidentiality.

[14]

Of the three, given the [15]scale of the layoffs happening at Twitter , Block Party's tools to block harassment on Twitter could have the strongest prospects right now. Unless, that is, the platform implodes.

This isn't a move we expected from Mozilla, but then again, the organization does have a track record of unexpected maneuvers. A fine example is this rather bemusing Mozilla email submitted by reader Adam Kean:

[20]

Venture capital isn't the only unexpected move from Mozilla of late

This message was followed closely by another, containing an apology for spamming "a couple hundred thousand friends." Or possibly former friends, we suspect.

[21]

Mozilla apologizes for spamming, er, a couple hundred thousand friends

The text, apparently, came from the [22]Sagan Ipsum generator – the server for which, note, doesn't use HTTPS, so you might get a security warning. Adam did.

[23]

Although the site seems innocuous enough, this warning did not reassure our reader

Could have been worse, we suppose: Mozilla could have emailed billions and billions. ®

Weird play, but OK

So they still have a pile of cash that they are watching slowly disappear, so they are going to invest it in startups with a clearer road to profits.

Not totally crazy, but they should be crystal clear where that money came from. People might get cranky. But both Mozilla and Apache have fostered projects that have had a real impact, so the clearly have at least some eye for this stuff. My initial reaction was to worry this was an excuse to drain what was left of the warchest and shunt it to the friends of the current management, but looking at the list of companies, I have to say this may be a good play.

Microsoft Mandatory Survey (#1)

Customers who want to upgrade to Windows 98 Second Edition must now fill
out a Microsoft survey online before they can order the bugfix/upgrade.

Question 1: What is your opinion of the Microsoft antitrust trial?

A. The DoJ is wasting taxpayer's money. Now, if the DOJ were to upgrade
all of its computer systems to Windows, then the department would be
making wise use of tax dollars.

B. All of the Microsoft email messages that the evil government has
presented as evidence are obviously taken out of context or have been
completely twisted around. I mean... Bill Gates would never say "let's
cut off their air supply" in a memo; it's an obvious fabrication.

C. Judge Jackson is obviously biased in favor of the DOJ's vigilante
persecution of Microsoft.

D. If Microsoft loses, it will be the gravest miscarriage of justice in
all the history of mankind.
