However, Twitter told staff there have been no plans for company-wide layoffs ever since the mogul signed the [1]merger agreement .
According to documents obtained by [2]The Washington Post , Musk told prospective investors in the deal that he aimed to slash Twitter's 7,500 staff down to 2,000.
[3]
The newspaper claims that cuts are on the horizon whether or not Musk's takeover goes ahead. Citing corporate documents and "people familiar" with the matter, management wants to reduce payroll by $800 million, or nearly a quarter of the workforce.
[4]
[5]
Twitter is also considering reducing its infrastructure overheads, "including datacenters that keep the site functioning for more than 200 million users that log on each day."
Twitter General Counsel Sean Edgett warned workers to expect "tons of public rumors and speculation" as the October 28 deadline for the deal draws near in an internal memo.
[6]
"We do not have any confirmation of the buyer's plans following close and recommend not following rumors or leaked documents but rather wait for facts from us and the buyer directly," he added.
[7]Bloomberg verified that investors were told of the planned cuts – as well as the target of doubling revenues within three years on the back of a skeleton crew.
"Since the merger agreement has been in place, there have been no plans for any company-wide layoffs," Edgett said.
[8]
And of course, all of this should fill Twitter employees with confidence.
WaPo spoke to a former Twitter data scientist, Edwin Chen, about the effects of the proposed cuts and was told that Twitter would be less able to keep accounts secure and moderate illegal material.

"It would be a cascading effect where you'd have services going down and the people remaining not having the institutional knowledge to get them back up, and being completely demoralized and wanting to leave themselves."
Meanwhile, Bloomberg reports that the Biden administration is considering subjecting Musk ventures – including the Twitter takeover – [13]to national security reviews on grounds of the billionaire's apparent softening stance toward Russia.
First, he proposed [14]terms for peace favorable to Putin between Russia and Ukraine based on UN-supervised votes in annexed regions, Crimea officially given to Russia, and Ukraine's assured neutrality. Then he [15]moaned that his decision to supply Starlink to Ukraine had lost the company over $80 million, and [16]asked the Pentagon to start picking up the tab.
Then he [17]threw his toys out of the pram , huffing: "The hell with it … even though Starlink is still losing money & other companies are getting billions of taxpayer $, we'll just keep funding Ukraine govt for free."
Bloomberg's sources say Uncle Sam could possibly scrutinize Musk's dealings through the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS), which reviews acquisitions of American companies by foreign buyers.
Musk's Twitter consortium includes Prince Alwaleed bin Talal of Saudi Arabia, Binance Holdings Ltd, which is run by a Chinese native, and Qatar's sovereign wealth fund. ®

Re: Ugh
So lets get this straight, you see a headline which has Musks name in there, you want him to go away, and yet you're attracted to the story like a moth to a flame.
Maybe if you stayed away it would solve YOUR problem.
You need Musk, like a hero needs a villian
The rig is on fire
Is this the Nokia moment for Twitter? Oh, Elop started to hammer Nokia down only after actually being onboard.
If you haven’t done by now, turn your popcorn kettlle on quickly!
Re: The rig is on fire
Elop triggered a large contractual bonus for himself by selling Nokia to Microsoft. Elon appears to be going for the [1]greater fool investment strategy but I am not convinced anyone of Earth is greater than Elon. This may explain The Boring Company and SpaceX working toward a rocket capable of a return trip to Mars.

Under normal circumstances I'd have some sympathy for the workers of Twitter, but like those mercenaries at Instagram and Facebook dancing to the whims of Zuck this is very much a bed they've made for themselves to lie in.
Should be an easy task...
Axe anyone publicly displaying their personal pronouns and/or uses pink/green/purple/blue hair dye.
Boot that crowd out and using twitter might become a somewhat tolerable experience!
To be fair
By now, aside from maybe some people who are really close to having some stock options vest, anyone who has any marketable skills has likely jumped ship as soon as Musk's offer was accepted by the Board, because none of them would want to work for Musk. What's left is going to be the detritus that accumulates at any company over a certain size. That all said, I still agree with the earlier commentard about Musk being a tiresome twat who needs to just go away.
Re: To be fair
>By now, aside from maybe some people who are really close to having some stock options ves
Silicon Valley comp packages work where you are granted a new set of stock (RSUs rather than options) each year to replace that which vested in a previous year, on a four year vest. This has the twin effect of ensuring employees don't hit their peak total compensation until year 2 or 3, and then ensuring they *always* have a lot of money on the table should they choose to leave.
In other words that "maybe some people" is probably quite a lot of people, and for all of them quite a lot of money - as much as 40-50% of your annual salary scheduled to vest across the coming 12-18 months for tenured staff.
In happier times you'd just find someone like a Meta or Google or Databricks or whoever who can match that total comp number with an equity package of their own to make the issue moot, but in this market that's not the given it was even a year ago.
So it won't be an immediate brain drain, but spread over the coming 18 months as people's equity schedules hit the point at which it really isn't worth staying any longer.
I'd laugh if it turned out most of the workforce at Twitter were bots.
Definitely some droids there
Indeed so, perhaps self-driving twitter bots at that. I mean, what could go wrong?
Does Twatter actually make any money?
For a website which could be created in a flash, which doesn't have any USP, not really, I'm surprised there are that many jobs that need doing at this place

The scaling needed to distribute all the crap to subscribers wasn't that easy when it started. Hence, the well-known fail whale. But, yeah, since then Telegram groups and channels do more and do it better.
told investors that he will gut the workforce by 75 percent
Solid business plan there from Electric Car-ly Fiorina.
Hmm
For some reason I imagine sales of colourful hair dye and mood crystals to take a big hit
Re: Hmm
I think the mood crystals are alt-right these days. More likely to be soy milk and crayons to go with the tide pod hair dye.
Re: Hmm
Yup. The "wellbeing" community is now totally alt.rightvredpilled these days. "WWG1WGA" etc.
What happens if the purchase is blocked by the US/some other government?
The article mentioned that Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS) will be having a look at this deal, and I assume other countries too may want to have a look as well.
What happens if US or some other country objects to Twitter being purchased by Musk and friends?
Does that mean Musk can cancel the deal without any repercussions - since government rulings are not something he is in control of?
Will he even have to pay the billion dollar breakup fee if this happens?
Am curious what will happens in such case. Anyone with some informative answers?
Re: What happens if the purchase is blocked by the US/some other government?
If the deal is vetoed by a regulator, he can walk away from it. But there's little chance of that happening for any market reason.
Ugh
Can't he just go away? Tiresome twat.
