Juno offering Linux-powered tablet PC for pre-order

The promised [1]device looks decent. It will have a quad-core "Jasper Lake" Celeron N5100, a 1920 x 1200 10.1-inch touchscreen, 8GB of non-upgradable RAM and a choice of SSD capacities: 256GB, 512GB or a terabyte. The CPU runs at a not-too-rapid 1.1GHz, but can turbo-boost up to 2.8GHz. The basic tablet is all you get, the stylus is an optional extra.

It's very likely that you'll be able to get lots of third-party keyboard cases and so on, though. This is a fairly common form-factor, and multiple similar devices are out there, such as the Chuwi [3]Hi10 Go , which with 6GB of RAM and just 128GB of flash goes for about $239, or the [4]Dere D10 , which is closer to $500 but does come with a detachable magnetic keyboard and sports an RJ-45 socket.
These are just the first two such devices we came across when doing a search; there are doubtless many more. For the record, though, this vulture bought an older model of Chuwi tablet a few years ago, an Arm-based Hi9 Air, and for its spec it was superb value for money.
What's interesting about it, of course, and why The Reg FOSS desk is writing about it, is that it runs Linux. Specifically, it comes with [5]Mobian , a mobile-oriented remix of Debian, which comes with the [6]Phosh touchscreen GUI, based on GNOME and Wayland. We mentioned Phosh before [7]when looking at postmarketOS . The Mobian [8]wiki has more info about the project.

What's significant about this is two things. One is that the lower end of the x86 performance and power usage scale now overlaps that of more conventional, Arm-based devices. Several manufacturers tried to sell low-end Intel-based tablets based on Windows 8, and some of them [10]could be picked up for a song fairly soon afterwards. (This, of course, is a sign of their commercial success, or lack thereof.) The snag was that many had so little storage that it was [11]difficult even to upgrade their OS to a newer version. The other thing is that mainline, generic Linux can now usefully support such devices: the drivers and touch-oriented UIs exist.

What's also of note is that these inexpensive, generic devices that have been trickling out of OEMs in China for a few years now are rather better-equipped than Arm/Android-style devices. The Juno tablet, and the Chuwi and Dere ones, have both USB-3 and USB-C ports, as well as mini-HDMI and a slot for more storage. You can plug them into an off-the-shelf external hub and have a full-size screen, keyboard, mouse, and speakers. Unlike pretty much any Android tablet, this device can turn into a full desktop PC, or while on the move, with a couple of standard dongles and cables, you can interface it to just about anything.
As we [16]explained when looking at Armbian early this year , supporting a third-party OS on an Arm device is not trivial. The Arm market doesn't have standard firmware, for instance, but x86 kit does. An Intel tablet is just a low-end PC, and as such it's almost infinitely more versatile.

Tablet sales [18]continue to slide this year , as they did [19]five years ago and indeed were [20]already doing in 2015 . Which is a pity as [21]we predicted that Linux tablets were coming in 2010, although [22]things were looking less confident by a decade ago.
Still, Arm tablets are by nature very limited. They are nothing but tablets, and even projects like Armbian and postmarketOS are limited by what the hardware can do. x86 tablets have no such limitations. You won't get far running Windows in a VM on a Celeron with 8 gigs of RAM, but it will run WINE perfectly fine. ®

Kinda pricey...
..for a no-name, non-upgradable Chinese tablet with a slow, low-end processor. I'm all for more Linux based appliances but Apple's base iPad is $100 cheaper, boasts far higher specs, has an OS designed from the ground up to be touch native and a vast ecosystem. Tablets are not flying off the shelves these days and I'm struggling to see what market niche this would fill other than developers working on touch native applications.

I'm not excited by this, but you've overstated the iPad quite a lot. Let's take a look at whether "Apple's base iPad is $100 cheaper, boasts far higher specs". I'm using the latest base iPad 9th generation for the comparison.
Pricing: iPad at $329, entry-level Juno tablet at $425, you are correct.
Storage: iPad has 64 GB, Juno tablet has 256 GB. This is not sounding like far higher specs.
Storage expansion: iPad: No replaceable storage, you can buy a 256 GB model. Juno tablet: I can't tell if it's replaceable, so we'll assume it's not. You can go up to 1 TB and it supports Micro SD and USB storage expansion. The iPad isn't looking great.
RAM: iPad: 3 GB, Juno tablet: 8 GB. Exactly which of these specs are far higher?
Processor: The iPad's A13 and the N5100 in the Juno tablet. This is the one spec where the iPad has an advantage, but for all the praise Apple's chips get, the A13 isn't a high-end part. It benchmarks about 40% faster than the N5100. That's worth consideration, but it's not a massive change as would be using the latest iPad Air with an M1 (which starts at $600 with 64 GB).
I'm not trying to pretend that this is cheap, and probably some of the value is because some people just want stuff designed for Linux. The markets for these two tablets are likely pretty separate. Still, if you want an honest comparison, don't pretend the specs of something with less than half the memory, no expansion, and with a version that has a quarter the storage, constitutes "far higher".

I expected a group of Linux Nerds who hail the New World Order of Linux to descend upon this with more love. Where's that "Linux/Everything" love?

I could probably find a use for this as-and-when it is ready to ship. The website flags it as a beta product and there is a status list of various work items. The Mobian OS itself is flagged as unstable and the two alternatives as very unstable. Various other significant modules require work. I was amused by the entry for "suspend"
"Suspend but does not wake up". I think that is more commonly known as shutdown.
I'll bookmark the page and check in occasionally to see how it is progressing. Meanwhile my plans for a homebrew linux touch device based on the Pi are on hold.
