The call to arms was discussed at a regular town hall meeting on 27 July in which staff raised worries about layoffs, and Sundar Pichai, CEO at Google parent Alphabet asked for recommendations, according to sources spoken to by [1]CNBC and documentation from the event.
“I wanted to give some additional context following our earnings results, and ask for your help as well,” Pichai said. “It’s clear we are facing a challenging macro environment with more uncertainty ahead.”

Alphabet reported [3]calendar Q2 financials the day before – on July 26 – that showed a 13 percent rise in revenues to $69.86 billion, considerably slower than the 62 percent expansion logged in the prior financial year when the pandemic was still in full swing.

“There are real concerns that our productivity as a whole is not where it needs to be for the head count we have,” Pichai told workers at the all-hands meeting.
The bossman further urged workers to “create a culture that is more mission-focused, more focused on our products, more customer focused. We should think about how we can minimize distractions and really raise the bar on both product excellence and productivity.”
[6]
Under the title Simplicity Sprint, the company wants Googlers to post their ideas in an internal survey that has a deadline of the middle of this month.
Questions include, as per CNBC: “What would help you work with greater clarity and efficiency to serve our users and customers? Where should we remove speed bumps to get to better results faster? How do we eliminate waste and stay entrepreneurial and focused as we grow?”
The tone of the talk by Pichai spooked some Google employees, with one asking if layoffs are on the horizon. The company execs didn’t provide a firm no.
[7]
“We’re asking teams to be more focused and efficient and we’re working out what that means as a company as well. Even though we can’t be sure of the economy in the future, we’re not currently looking to reduce Google’s overall workforce,” said Google’s chief people officer Fiona Cicconi.
“I really get that there is some anxiety around this based on what we’re hearing from other companies and what they’re doing and, as Sundar mentioned, we’re still hiring for critical roles,” she added.

In [13]mid-July it emerged that Google was “slowing the pace of hiring for the rest of the year, while still supporting our most important opportunities.” It would still focus on “engineering, technical and other critical roles.”
All this comes at a time when tech giants are watching with interest any moves that customers make as clouds gather over the economy.
Google’s latest results were in line with Wall Street expectations but growth rates were most modest in digital advertising – Google’s main business – and the Cloud division reported wider losses than a year ago.
Alphabet CFO Ruth Porat said the company is “investing to support the long-term growth and given the upside that we see … looking at the path to profitability.”
No exec was willing to say when that day might come. Perhaps employees can help. ®

Re: Here be brainstorming...
You could save a heck of a lot more money if you got rid of every one with the word "Chief" in their title. I guarantee you would see a massive uptick in morale as well.
And for every "Chief" you got rid of, you could hire a dozen engineers (or more!). That would really put you at the cutting edge of technology and development.
What? Too radical for Silicon Valley? Bah! You said you wanted entrepreneurial!
Re: Here be brainstorming...
If 'chiefs' earn more than twelve times as much as the engineers, there is something seriously out of balance.
Re: Here be brainstorming...
You're joking right?
Sundar Pichai (Google Chief) is said to earn more than $100 million per year from Google.
I'm pretty certain the average Engineers wage at google is not $833,000 per year.
You're not wrong that it is stupidly out of balance though...
Re: Here be brainstorming...
You're right! Quick, fire 12 engineers and hire another Chief Whatever Officer! That's clearly what the company needs!
Job application option?
I wonder if I could get a job if I suggest that the Pixel 7 phone has a user accessible battery compartment on the back below the new camera so that it's easy to put a new battery in the phone when the old battery dies?
Stunning failure of management...
... IMHO, for the CEO of a company to say, basically, "sorry, chaps, but we haven't got a clue what you're all doing - could you fill us in?".
Re: Stunning failure of management...
It won't look good to investors either, they are basically admitting they don't have a plan. Long term it never works out when companies start looking at economies rather than fresh investment. I'm sure there's plenty to be saved on the likes of bean bags and table football but they wouldn't appear "hip" if they start rationalising that.
The 20% time must also be an easy target. That probably doesn't give the same ROI as what their staffers are supposed to be doing but occasionally something out of left field worth pursuing will come out of it.
It doesn't sound like a problem that removing the top ten or so layers of management wouldn't solve.
The Suggestion Box
It'll never catch on.
Never mind, the C suite can pat themselves on the back and convince themselves they've invented another new paradigm, now that they've admitted to the lesser ranks that they're all out of ideas. Why not call it "Internal Cloudsourcing" or something equally dismal?
Not only Google, and definitely not new
Many moons ago, back when I worked for Capita, they ran a compulsory How-To-Be-More-Productive brainstorming workshop thing, run by some godawful evangelist type.
It was such a blatant attempt to guilt-trip the minions into doing more work for zero reward that it created a LOT of ill-feeling towards management. Which was quite an achievement, all things considered.
Pichai
Am I the only one who always reads that name as 'Pikachu'?
Google 20% time
So I guess spending 20% of your time on your own bluesky project is now officially shitcanned?
I wonder what percentage of answers
…are words to the effect of "not having to fill out stupid surveys would be a good start".
Re: I wonder what percentage of answers
There's the other perennial favourite: "get rid of middle management"
Re: I wonder what percentage of answers
You're letting top management get away scot free?
They don't even know how to support their products
The mere fact that Googlebet loves to spend money turning their good ideas into bad products (Stadia, the infinite messaging apps, Google Pay), or just flat out force bad products onto customers, then promptly abandoning said projects because they're too stupid to listen to feedback and fix problems, is enough to make a lot of people not care about their work. "This 10 year project is going to be canned within 6 months of launch"
That upper management STILL doesn't have the slightest idea that that might be a problem is just unbelievable
Here be brainstorming...
Get rid of every employee with the following words in their job description: Gender, identity, inclusion, equity, equality, opportunity.
