You can liquid cool this Linux laptop to let the GPU soar

Computer chips are getting so hot these days, some companies are starting to put liquid cooling into laptops so that they can run faster — or quieter and less hot to the touch.

Just look at Germany-based Tuxedo Computers, which released a 15-inch high-performance laptop earlier this year that supports an external liquid-cooling module. After initially running Windows, the [1]Tuxedo Stellaris 15 – Gen4 now plays nice with Linux, the vendor [2]recently announced .

The laptop can be configured with some of the fastest CPUs out there, letting users choose between an Intel Core i7-12700H, Intel Core i9-12900H, or AMD Ryzen 9 6900HX. For GPU, the laptop supports a wider range of options, from Nvidia's GeForce RTX 3060 to the RTX 3080 Ti.

Tuxedo's liquid-cooling module, called Aquaris, is offered as a €199 ($201 based on current exchange rates) add-on for the laptop, which varies in price based on configuration but starts at around €2,000 ($2,028) for the hardware.

The PC vendor said the water-cooling system can be used to complement the laptop's conventional air cooling, either to maximize the performance of the CPU and GPU or to lower fan noise and reduce the temperatures of the laptop's surface and hardware.

Unfortunately, Tuxedo didn't provide any claims about how much more performance Aquaris would enable. However, [6]a review of a competing liquid-cooled laptop with similar specs, [7]the XMG Oasis , said the liquid cooling enabled a roughly 10 percent improvement in gaming performance. Aquaris is controlled via software using a Bluetooth connection, and the software lets users adjust the speeds of the fan depending on thermal needs and monitor how that impacts the CPU and GPU.

The system works by sending cool water through two hoses that connect to connectors in the back of the laptop. The water flows from one hose into the laptop, goes through an internal cooling tube that sits on top of the air cooling's heat pipes, and sends warm water back through the other hose.

The liquid-cooling system weighs roughly 3.06 pounds, and it needs to plug into an outlet for power, so this isn't a mobile solution by any means. However, this could be useful for someone who plans to use the laptop for less compute-intensive needs on the go and then has a dedicated station for the liquid-cooling setup.

We hear about liquid-cooled desktops and [13]servers quite regularly, so the idea of a liquid-cooled laptop is quite novel still.

Whether or not enough people will put up with the lack of mobility and the setup requirements in exchange for some extra performance is another story, but these computer chips do seem to keep getting hotter and hotter. ®

I've never bothered with anything more than a moderate laptop with 16-32GB of RAM and a far-from-top-of-the-range CPU with built-in graphics.

Laptops are only for presentations and remoting to real hardware in my books, not actually processing or keeping important data on; they're far too prone to theft and failure for that.

I'm inclined to agree with you.

But there are some people who seem to like spending $10k on a laptop which is not as good as a $4-5k PC. I'm not one to judge how people send their money, but if thats what they want to do I wont stop them.

Personally, if I were a gamer then I'd get a "real" PC with the goods for that purpose, and a seperate laptop for the presentations and whatever else needs the portability which a laptop provides, and I'd probably still have change from $10k

Well there's a concept no-one was asking for. I'm pushed to find practical applications for having a Laptop attached to a giant cooling unit where either a proper Laptop or a desktop wouldn't do it better.

I large number of laptops already use heat pipes, which contain small amounts of liquid which transfers heat from the CPU/GPU to other cooler areas by first turning the liquid into steam, and then the steam back into a liquid at the cooler areas (near the fans/vents). The quantity of liquid may be small, but it is still critical to cooling the laptop.
