However, a new source of potential doom has now quite literally emerged in the Eastern US. Observers there have been preparing for the appearance of the cicada swarm referred to as Brood X – also known as the Great Eastern Brood – for some time, a task made much easier by this particular group's well-documented 17-year life cycle.
But the billions-strong hexapod hordes have never displayed any intent to upset the natural order and take over the world. Until now.
[3]
In a chilling video reportedly shot at the Hampton Inn near Princeton, New Jersey, Twitter user Andrew R Gordon has revealed that cicadas are now capable of opening doors, an ability previously thought to be possessed only by humans, [4]velociraptors and [5]certain particularly sassy cats .
They can open doors too! [6]pic.twitter.com/d4drDmB68v — Andrew R. Gordon 🇺🇸🪐🐛🎢🌪🇺🇸 (@AndrewRGordon2) [7]June 7, 2021
It is not known if this desire to gain access to enclosed spaces is a prelude to a bloodthirsty purge of humanity or if the insects just fancied a rest in the hotel's air-conditioned lobby, following a bout of the frenzied coupling that [8]characterises their septdecennial outbreaks .
Given their inscrutable, compound-eyed expressions, it is obviously difficult just by looking at them to ascertain the exact intentions of Magicicada septendecim , Magicicada cassinii and Magicicada septendecula – the three species that constitute the unfathomable insectoid mass that is Brood X.

But from new evidence coming in, it is clear some sort of reckoning is coming and sadly, this impending war between Homo sapiens and the billions-strong hivemind may be all our fault.
Research has shown that far from being an unending stream of countless insects, Brood X swarm numbers have dropped sharply in recent iterations, a fact seemingly related to increasing urban development in the eastern US. This has resulted in a decline in the numbers of trees the cicadas need to lay their eggs in, and whose roots their long-lived nymph forms feed on.
[13]
[14]
Having learned of this obvious danger to their future prospects, Brood X may have decided to stage a final do-or-die push to crush humankind, before their numbers dwindle to the point where such an effort is impossible. And it is becoming clear that this final push will take the form of a decapitation strike against the leader of the free world: US President Joe Biden.
Yesterday, Emmy-winning broadcast meteorologist Lauryn Ricketts reported that a gigantic cloud had been picked up on weather radar covering Washington DC, much of central Maryland and parts of northern Virginia. But rather than a thunderstorm, this was in fact one huge, vengeful cloud of cicadas.
THIS is not rain, not ground clutter (the radar beam picking up objects close the radar site --which is in Loudoun County).... the Hydrometeor Classification algorithm identifies this as biological in nature..so likely CICADAS being picked up by the radar beam... We can't be sure of their intentions, but it doesn't look good.
Heaven help us all. ®

Re: Green Brain
Not sure that sleeping for 17 years will give our razor-sharp insectoid Cloud compute much scope for long-term planning. Mind you, there are moments when I envy 'em those 17 years...
Re: Green Brain
Oh I dunno. My ex-flatmate has been giving it her best for the last... hmm... 16 years and counting.
Re: Green Brain
Cicadas naturally super swarm across continents up to two to three times per century. It really is a tribute to willful human ignorance that we purposely pretend that it's not normal when it happens yet once again.
The problem is we blow all our resource savings in the name of profit and expansion, discarding responsible preparation for short term profit and mindless indulgences.
Ursine omitance
Bears can also open doors, those in the US have learned at least to open car doors. So I think that counts. Lock your doors in bear country.
Re: Ursine omitance
I was at the campground at the Mt Whitney portal a few years ago, with some friends. In the middle of the afternoon, we watched as an immature bear (not yet fully grown) wandered the parking lot, checking out the cars. If it saw or smelled something interesting, it just hooked its claws into the weather seal between the door frame and the top of the window and pulled, breaking out the window. Turns out, a bear can gain access to a car in much the same way that a human opens a pull-top beer can and with about the same apparent effort.
So, by all means lock your car, but don't succumb to the illusion that this is enough to keep the bears out. I'm sure they have an effective way of gaining entry to homes, too.

It's them or us!
So well known scientist James Cameron produced a documentary showing how trees are 'teleconnected'. What one tree knows, all know. This was further demonstrated by other scientists who used trees to measure temperatures hundreds, if not thousands of kms away.
So it stands to reason that if trees are the antennas of the Earth, then creatures living in symbiosis with the trees might also know what's going on. Like suggestions that it would be a really good idea for humans to eat bugs. The bugs may of course have different ideas, and decide to strike first. This could be especially troublesome given cicadas can drill into trees to eat their sap, so getting through skin to get to ours shouldn't be much of a problem.
Re: It's them or us!
There's a religion somewhere that believes trees are the highest form of life, that we are all re-incarnate and eventually end up as trees.... if your a good boy/girl! heh
Personal portable FlameThrowers...
A can of aerosol hair spray, a butane lighter, & you can do serious damage to any bug swarm. Keep a few spares of flame-inna-can & butane lighters on you at all times so you can maintain the defensive cloud-o-death.
Don't be fooled by the salesdork that claims you can do more damage with a bottle of liquid fire starter fuel akin to what you would use to light a bbq or camp fire, you need the aerosol to fill the air with the explosive fumes that become the literal fuel-air-bomb that takes out as many bugs as possible. The bulk liquid fuel will only kill the few hundred bugs it might physicly touch, where the aerosol will take out _thousands_ at a time.
This PSA brought to you by a Summer spent in Texas defending myself from mosquitos strong enough to abduct pickup trucks & tear open the cab to get to the squishy screaming tastey bits inside. Gunshots only irritate them, but a quick fwoosh of the flame-inna-can drives them away to try & regrow the missing bits & gives you time to escape...
