AWS bringing a full region to the United Arab Emirates

Amazon Web Services has announced it’s close to bringing a full three Availability Zone region to the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
The cloud colossus [1]splashed down in the Emirates in 2018 with Direct Connect Amazon CloudFront, a long way short of its full offering. Neighbouring Bahrain got a full region in 2019.
Now the Emirates will get its own AWS region, in the first half of 2022. That’s a rather shorter span of time between announcement and operations than is usual for AWS.

AWS is currently building four regions around the Indian Ocean – Australia, Indonesia and India also have bit barns under construction. Spain and Switzerland are AWS’ other current construction projects.
Microsoft, Alibaba, and Oracle already have full cloud presences in the UAE. AWS is therefore a little late to the party but has also cited current Emirates-based customers including the Mohammed Bin Rashid Space Centre as evidence it has willing buyers in the oil-rich nation. ®
