IBM still spending its way to cloud relevance with Taos purchase

(2021/01/15)

IBM [1]is to snaffle San Jose-based consulting outfit Taos as it seeks to bolster its cloud biz.

With 30 years of enterprise tech consulting under its belt, Taos has its fingers in many industry pies, including media, finance, healthcare, and education. The company these days is all about migrating data centres and will happily sell customers hybrid cloud managed services too.

[2]

Taos will join other cloud outfits including 7Summits, which was [3]bought by IBM earlier this year to beef up Big Blue's Salesforce services as well as adding to its hybrid cloud pot.

IBM also [4]snapped up Helsinki-based Nordcloud in December 2020, a self-proclaimed "cloud transformation services".

[5]

Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed, although Taos had [6]received a majority investment from Boston private equity investor Bunker Hill Capital back in 2015.

Taos has sales agreements with Amazon Web Services, Google Cloud Platform, and Microsoft Azure. Taos CEO Hamilton Yu talked up his firm's nous with client cloud migration as well as hybrid and multi-cloud management, and reckoned these will fit well with IBM's Global Business Services division - not to be mistaken with IBM Global Technology Services (GTS).

John Granger, IBM Global Business Services senior veep for cloud application innovation and chief operating officer, said the plan was to use Taos "to drive growth and adoption of IBM's hybrid cloud platform throughout the Americas."

"The platform," he said, "gives enterprises the freedom to choose from multiple providers to best meet their business and IT needs, and we are committed to helping our clients successfully navigate their open hybrid cloud journeys with those providers."

[7]

It's been an interesting few months at IBM. It announced [8]plans to spin off GTS last year. [9]While loading staffers into the redundogun , it also appointed freshly minted CEO Arvind Krishna as chairman of the company's board while his predecessor, Ginni Rometty, landed a [10]part-time consultancy role . ®

"The platform," he said, "gives enterprises the freedom to choose from multiple providers to best meet their business and IT needs, and we are committed to helping our clients successfully navigate their open hybrid cloud journeys with those providers."

..as long as its strongly suggested that the platform be IBM based, or a platform that benefits IBM financially in some way, shape, or form.

Make no mistake, IBM doesn't take business just to be impartial - its all about the next sale of IBM tat on offer.

Pointless

So India Business Machines thinks it can buy itself back into relevance. The reason they are mocked now is they botched too many important projects, acquisitions, and products over the last 40 years that many are surprised they are still around and marginally viable.

It'll be the typical consulting acquisition story. Big slovenly corp buys little agile corp, sudden dread for anyone at little corp, but look at those shares! Just have to stay a few years to vest, and then run in the opposite direction as fast as possible. After 2 years, anyone staying hates their lives, everyone else ran away to good jobs, and it's another bunch of clueless outsourced middle management running the operation as status quo fail for big corp.

Already IBM is crapping on Redhat, running off customers using CentOS to anyone but IBM. Anyone that Taos had as a customer will move away too when costs start going up, the IBM sales suits show up for revenue generating events, and you smell nothing but bullshit.

You just can't have anything good today.
