Where there's a .mil, there's Huawei: Pentagon allowed to keep using Chinese tech deemed too dangerous for everyone else – report

(2020/08/15)

The crackdown on telecoms gear from Huawei and other Chinese companies in federal networks will not apply to US Department of Defense, at least for a few more weeks.

Under [1]Section 889 of the 2019 National Defense Authorization Act, US agencies and the contractors they employ were [2]supposed to stop having any dealings with five Chinese companies – Huawei, ZTE, Hytera, Hikvision, and Dahu – by August 13.

But [3]a report from Defense News cites an internal Pentagon memo in claiming that the Department of Defense has been granted a short-term waiver from the blockade until September 30.

The Pentagon did not respond to a request for comment.

In 2018, the US government shunned Huawei gear, citing concerns that the telco's close relationship with the Chinese government could lead it to equip its hardware with backdoors that would allow Beijing to eavesdrop on top-secret communications.

In 2019, that crackdown was extended to [4]all US networks , again on the grounds that the use of Huawei gear would pose a serious threat to national security.

Huawei has routinely rejected these claims, saying its products are perfectly safe to use both in enterprise and government networks, that it doesn't install backdoors for the Middle Kingdom, and the ban is just political maneuvering by the Trump administration.

That hasn't however, stopped [5]the US and other nations from excluding Huawei from their 5G networks. ®

I think you meant "the US and other client states . . ."

Just another example of one rule for me and my friends, another rule for the plebs.

No, it's not a matter of rules, it's a matter of them getting off their lazy butts and doing what they're told. Yes, of course their IT budget has run out, it's why they bought cheap buggy kit rather than expensive buggy kit in the first place.

The US military's budget has run out? You must be daft, just unobservant or a chest thumping USian (or all of the above).

The US' military budget is larger than the next 8 countries combined. It has not been able to account for some $21 trillion (look it up).

No money? They're the ONLY government branche that gets more than enough money to operate. Everything else, from public education to infrastructure and other public services are falling apart.
