The outfit [1]says the bit barn build will deliver on its plan to enhance security, reduce latency and provide lots of lovely jobs.
The company has also promised a “state of the art physical and network security defense system” and said it expects the data centre to be operational “by early 2022.”
The company has not said why it plans to build a data centre rather than just rent racks galore in a co-lo facility or sign a deal like its existing $800m multi-year arrangement with Google Cloud.
But it has said its Irish operations recently became the data controller alongside TikTok's UK entity, and is now the service provider for our users across the EEA and Switzerland. Which should mean that the new facility covers off the various regulatory factors required to work with personal data and user-generated content across the continent.
New of the bit barn build came after [2]Microsoft bid for parts of the company , the USA and China continued to [3]bat it around as part of their geopolitical brawl, India banned the app and Facebook baked a clone of TikTok into Instagram.
Where the company will be by early 2022 is anyone’s guess. ®

Well, seeing as Safe Harbor and Privacy Shield have been found insufficient by EU courts, why would you risk user's personal data on a system which Uncle Sam thinks it can rifle through at any time? And, if the need is big enough, then it is far cheaper to run your own data centre than rent from Google, Microsoft or AWS.
I do wonder if Tik Tok will just disappear like MySpace etc when the yoof get bored of it and their gandparents start using it, like everything else basically.
On that basis Facegramter should go first with TT replacing them.
Keeping out of the hands of any US corporation would be advantageous. In regard to doing business with that tiny remnant known as the Rest of the World being banned in the US must surely be worth while.
If I were inclined to video blog, I would far sooner do it on Tik Tok than Instagram or YouTube.
Instagram is part of FB, nuff said and You Tube get stranger by the day in the way they treat the creators of their content.
