AWS has opened a new region in Milan, Italy.
It’s the usual AWS affair: three availability zones for those of you who like your cloud resilient, Direct Connect on tap from the new bit barns to the rest of AWS and the Frankfurt region and most core Amazon services up and running already.
AWS suggests this region as a sensible option for Italian users, but says it has a “latency advantage over other existing AWS regions when serving customers from other countries such as Austria, Greece, and Bulgaria.”
AWS teased the region in late 2018 and promised “early 2020” availability.
With Milan located in the Lombardy region that has been so hard-hit by the COVID-19 pandemic, it seems utterly reasonable that the opening wasn’t possible until late in the year’s fourth month.
AWS now has half a dozen European regions – Milan joins Frankfurt, Ireland, London, Paris and Stockholm – and plans to open another in Spain in 2022 or 2023. The company last week opened its first African region, in [1]Cape Town and also has regions in the works in Japan and Indonesia. ®

Anti-virus
As long as users have current anti-virus protection, using AWS services hosted in Milan should not be a problem.
For extra protection, they may want to inject some disinfectant into their data, light the fibre with sunlight and keep the data centre warm by turning the colling off!
