AMD engineers continue to prepare for upcoming Zen 6 powered Ryzen client processors on Linux.
At the end of October was [1]Linux patches tuning Ryzen Zen 6 for optimizing performance and power consumption with the AMD P-State Linux driver. Now in nearing the end of September, a new patch has surfaced to further refine the power/performance characteristics of those upcoming Zen 6 Ryzen processors.
The new patch adjusts the Energy Performance Preference (EPP) values for the performance and new low-power core types for Zen 6. These are the intended EPP values for the performance and low-power cores while the efficiency/dense core doesn't need any adjustments compared to what was submitted last month.
[2]The patch bumps the power EPP value from 64 to 115 while the low-power core sees its balance-performance value shift from 51 to 64 and the power value lower from 115 to 64. Lower EPP values shift the power/performance bias toward higher performance while higher values up to 255 shift the bias toward increased power-savings.
Not too exciting on its own but nice to see the continued flow of Ryzen Zen 6 client tuning happening pre-launch. Based on external observations with how things are trending right now, it's looking like [3]Linux 7.4 could be the initial sweet spot for supporting the next-generation Ryzen processors.
