Asahi Linux Hopes To Ship A Release Soon With Apple M3 Device Support

The Asahi Linux crew working to bring Linux support to Apple Silicon hardware is out today with a new status update on their initiatives, largely around Apple M3 bring-up as well as some M4/M5 achievements.
There is work underway for allowing better power management of the Apple CPU cores with the mainline Linux kernel. Due to upstream requirements on using the Power State Coordination Interface (PSCI) for power management on ARM64 devices and the current Apple Silicon and Asahi driver design currently not able to jive well within those constraints, only the downstream Asahi Linux code currently offers the "deep" Wait For Interrupt (WFI) instruction usage. Work is being done though to implement a UEFI Runtime Service based PSCI conduit that would work for Apple Silicon / Asahi purposes with Linux.
Asahi Linux developers have also continued making progress on bringing up Apple M3 series machines. There have been slight changes to microphone handling, web camera support is now working on M3 devices thanks to new patches, and more. Apple M3 USB port controller changes have led to more reverse engineering work and headaches but now with the latest downstream Asahi Linux code they do have USB 3.0 and Thunderbolt working.
Asahi Linux developers are almost ready to cut a release with Apple M3 support working for those using their downstream code. More details are expected in the coming weeks with Apple M3 on Asahi Linux. Obviously it will take more time to get all of that code upstreamed into the mainline Linux kernel.
Apple M4 and M5 bring-up has also continued by Asahi Linux developers but more work is still left to be completed there.
The Asahi Linux post also goes into various challenges they have faced in bringing up the Apple M4 due to Apple design choices as well as other headaches being faced due to Apple security features.
Asahi Linux developers have also made work toward GPU direct scan-out support as another important improvement, but more work remains before shipping that to users.
