With [2]the AMD Ryzen AI Halo developer platform there is the option of ordering this Ryzen AI Max+ mini PC with either Microsoft Windows 11 or "Linux OS". When receiving a AMD Ryzen AI Halo review sample last month, I fully expected it to just be an Ubuntu LTS install with ROCm preloaded. I was quite surprised when powering it up to find that it's an OS called the AMD Ryzen AI Developer Platform 1 "Rex" and is based on Debian Linux.

Today the review embargo lifts on the Ryzen AI Halo developer PC that is currently powered by the Ryzen AI Max+ 395 "Strix Halo". Beautiful piece of hardware and even with Strix Halo being over a year old now, I continue to be mesmerized by its performance potential. Besides the review, here's a piece covering my initial thoughts on the AMD Ryzen AI Developer Platform.

Going into it expecting to find just a preload of Ubuntu on the device and calling it a day, I was pleased to see AMD delivering a much more polished out-of-the-box Linux experience.

On first launch to the GNOME-based desktop there is the "AMD Ryzen AI Developer Center" that provides GUI-based controls for a number of features like managing installed apps from Llama.cpp and vLLM to ROCm, Node.js, and more. Plus the ability to easily install other apps like VS Code. Granted, AI developers using Linux are likely more than comfortable using the command line, but for those that are not there is this GUI option.

The Ryzen AI Developer Center also made it easy to toggle any software telemetry, adjusting graphics performance settings, and also toggling the light bar of the Ryzen AI Halo's LED lighting strip. The Ryzen AI Developer Center also has a GUI screen for remote access handling to toggle SSH access and the various credentials.

Lastly there is also the resources area in the Ryzen AI Developer Center for various AI development resources and guides.

The Ryzen AI Developer Platform ships with ROCm 7.13 preview installed plus AMD's apps like the Lemonade Server and then all the other popular AI software like vLLM, ComfyUI, Llama.cpp, PyTorch, and more.
