The Ubuntu Foundations Engineering Manager, Ravi Kant Sharma, with Canonical has provided an update regarding the current ARM64 state on Ubuntu Linux.

Over the past year Canonical has been working to make the Ubuntu stack for ARM64 "truly a first-class architecture" and that is what today's Ubuntu Discourse post is summarizing. Since Ubuntu 26.04 LTS, ARM64 packages are now in the Ubuntu main archive properly rather than Ubuntu Ports. Since last month, Canonical has also begun supporting kernel live patching on ARM64.

As covered back in January, Canonical also began [1]building a Steam Snap for Ubuntu ARM64 that leverages the FEX emulator . Since June, this Steam Snap for ARM64 was promoted to the stable channel.

Ubuntu has also been making progress over the past year in supporting Qualcomm Snapdragon X Elite laptops, as we have covered and tested in many Phoronix articles. Canonical is also working on enabling support for the latest Snapdragon X2 Elite laptops.

Ubuntu on ARM64 is also now enjoying the fruits of [2]Google bringing Chrome for Linux ARM64 , other new platform support, and maturing of the Snap ecosystem for apps on ARM64.
