Can openSUSE Tumbleweed Compete With CachyOS Performance?

Last week when delivering some [1]CachyOS benchmarks against Fedora 43 and Ubuntu 25.10 on the Framework Desktop with AMD Ryzen AI Max+, a few Phoronix readers wrote in with the question or belief that openSUSE Tumbleweed would better perform against CachyOS given the distribution's select x86_64-v3 packages and other advantages. As it's been a while since running any benchmarks of the rolling-release openSUSE Tumbleweed, here are those benchmarks now in the mix for seeing how the performance compares.

Building off the CachyOS / Ubuntu 25.10 / Fedora Workstation 43 benchmarks from last week on the Framework Desktop, here are the numbers now with openSUSE Tumbleweed tested on the same hardware. OpenSUSE Tumbleweed 20251031 with all available package updates as of testing time were used.

OpenSUSE Tumbleweed is currently on the Linux 6.17 kernel, Mesa 25.2.6 graphics drivers, the GCC 15.2 compiler, Python 3.13.9, and other modern package versions for this rolling-release.

The same Framework Desktop with AMD Ryzen AI Max+ 395 with Radeon 8060S Graphics, 128GB of RAM, and 2TB NVMe SSD were used for benchmarking clean installs of all these distributions. Thanks again to Framework Computer for the review sample in this very interesting AMD Strix Halo desktop system.
