For the Steam Survey results published last month for July it showed [1]Steam on Linux use approaching 3% . With hitting 2.89% in July there was hope that perhaps in August it would breach the elusive 3.0% threshold not seen since the original days of Steam on Linux when the overall Steam user base was also much smaller than it is today. But that didn't pan out and Steam on Linux numbers for August are showing a small dip.
The Steam Survey results for August 2025 were just revealed and show Linux at a 2.64% marketshare, down 0.25% from the month prior. The macOS percentage dropped by 0.11% to 1.77% while Windows gained 0.36% to 95.59%.
This was another month where when Linux use recedes, it's often correlated to increase in Chinese growth on Steam. Simplified Chinese rose by 0.59% for August to 26.03% while English language use fell by 2% down to 35.62%.
Valve's SteamOS platform is powering around 27.6% of the Linux installations reported by the Steam Survey while Arch Linux itself came in at an additional 10%. CachyOS also is trending well as another Arch Linux distribution at 4.69%.
Due to the Steam Deck being powered by a custom AMD APU and the popularity of AMD on Linux due to their open-source drivers and more, AMD CPU marketshare among Linux gamers continues to be at just under 70%.
