Fwupd 2.0 Released To Drop Legacy & Deprecated Bits, Adds New Features

([LVFS] 2 Hours Ago Fwupd 2.0)

Richard Hughes of Red Hat just announced Fwupd 2.0 as a major release to this open-source firmware updating utility for Linux systems. Fwupd 2.0 clears out a lot of long deprecated and legacy bits while adding new features and shipping many fixes.

The major version bump allows for Fwupd 2.0 to remove long-deprecated legacy CLI tools, dropping old libraries, and other changes to reduce runtime memory use and CPU startup costs. Legacy signing formats for verification of metadata and firmware have been removed.

New features in Fwupd 2.0 include an option to ignore firmware requirements for development, an API to allow uploading reports in GNOME-Firmware, support to run "fwupdtool esp-list --json", support for more modify-config options, support for large sections in EFI FFS3 volumes, and support for more CRC-16/CRC-32 types.

There is also a lot of bug fixes as well as support for a number of new hardware devices:

- Algoltek USB card readers

- AMD Kria SoM

- Cable Matters USB Hub

- Cinterion fdl-based devices

- CY6611 EZ-USB HX3PD

- Dell K2 Dock

- Elan 0C9F fingerprint devices

- HP Fleetwood and Hendrix docks

- Huddly L1, S1 and Crew

- Jabra PanaCast

- Lenovo Legion HID2 devices

- Lenovo ThinkSmart Bar

- Logitech Lemmy

- Logitech Sight

- Logitech Tap Touch Screen

Extraordinary claims demand extraordinary proof. There are many examples of
outsiders who eventually overthrew entrenched scientific orthodoxies, but
they prevailed with irrefutable data. More often, egregious findings that
contradict well-established research turn out to be artifacts. I have
argued that accepting psychic powers, reincarnation, "cosmic consciousness,"
and the like, would entail fundamental revisions of the foundations of
neuroscience. Before abandoning materialist theories of mind that have paid
handsome dividends, we should insist on better evidence for psi phenomena
than presently exists, especially when neurology and psychology themselves
offer more plausible alternatives.
