Wine 9.18 Delivers New Desktop Control Panel Applet

Wine 9.18 is out today as the newest bi-weekly development release for this open-source software that enables running Windows games and applications under Linux and other platforms.

The key improvements found with Wine 9.18 that landed over the past two weeks include a new Media Foundation back-end that is relying upon the FFmpeg library, initial support for network sessions within DirectPlay, a new Desktop Control Panel applet, and various bug fixes. There are 18 known bug fixes this release ranging from games like Warlords III to apps like WordSmith 9.0 and Repaper Studio.

The new control panel applet is able to display and make changes to the virtual desktop and monitors layout. Eventually this applet may be extended to show other display device information/settings.

Slashdot Effect Vaporizes Ganymede

In one of the more bizarre consequences of the infamous "Slashdot Effect",
Ganymede, the largest moon in our solar system, was completely and utterly
destroyed when CmdrTaco posted an article about the Hubble Space
Telescope's latest round of images and discoveries.

"It all started when we put up some more info on our web page about
Jupiter and Ganymede," said one NASA guy whom we believe may be in charge
of something. "CmdrTaco got wind of it, and posted it on his site."

According to observers, the webserver promptly exploded thereafter,
damaging the nearby remote control system used to aim and focus the
Hubble's cameras from the ground.

"All of the sudden our controls went wacky!" said one engineer. "The
Hubble then started shooting these death rays all over the universe. One
of those rays hit Ganymede, and *POOF*. There it went! We were all like,
'COOOOOL! Let's aim it something else!'"
