Ubuntu Core Desktop Seeing KDE Plasma Snap'ed Up, Other Ubuntu 24.10 Progress

([Ubuntu] 4 Hours Ago Ubuntu 24.10 Development)

Oliver Smith as the Interim Engineering Director for Ubuntu Desktop at Canonical is out with a new status update on Ubuntu 24.10 development and related ambitions. This also includes more details about bringing the KDE Plasma desktop to Ubuntu Core Desktop in Snap form.

With this year marking twenty years since the first Ubuntu Linux release, Ubuntu 4.10, the Canonical developers are being nostalgic and bringing various Ubuntu 4.10 elements to Ubuntu 24.10. This includes the original Ubuntu startup sound, the Ubuntu brown inspired elements, an updated Ubuntu logo, and upscaled remasters of their LTS wallpapers.

Ubuntu 24.10 has also been seeing the GNOME 47 packages land, updates to seeded apps, Microsoft EntraID authentication with Authd was brought to Ubuntu 24.04 LTS, and there is work on making the KDE Plasma desktop available for Ubuntu Core Desktop in Snap form.

More details on the "KDE Neon Core" work can be found via [1]these PDF slides from the KDE Akademy 2024 developer conference.

Additional insight into the Ubuntu 24.10 development work this month can be found via [2]Ubuntu Discourse . Look for the official release of Ubuntu 24.10 on 10 October.
