Intel Linux Graphics Driver To Finally Expose GPU Package Temperature

([Intel] 6 Hours Ago Intel GPU Temperature Reporting)

With the upcoming Linux 6.12 kernel [1]the Intel graphics driver will finally be able to report GPU fan speeds . Another long sought feature is also on the way for this open-source Linux driver: GPU package temperature reporting for Intel discrete GPUs.

Following the recent work to report graphics card fan speeds and the earlier hardware monitoring (HWMON) support around energy/power reporting, GPU package temperature reporting is finally on track for being mainlined into the Linux kernel. While the GPU fan speed support is queued up in DRM-Next for Linux 6.12, the GPU temperature patch is still sitting on the mailing list and thus might not be mainlined until the following 6.13 cycle.

[2]This patch adds the support to the Intel driver for GPU package temperature reporting via HWMON.

With [3]Arc Graphics cards being available for two years now, it's taken a long time to get the seemingly basic feature wired up. The patch is just a few dozen lines of code getting the i915 kernel driver to report Intel GPU temperatures.

Ferrum Master

The ancient masters were subtle, mysterious, profound, responsive.
The depth of their knowledge is unfathomable.
Because it is unfathomable,
All we can do is describe their appearance.
Watchful, like men crossing a winter stream.
Alert, like men aware of danger.
Courteous, like visiting guests.
Yielding like ice about to melt.
Simple, like uncarved blocks of wood.
Hollow, like caves.
Opaque, like muddy pools.

Who can wait quietly while the mud settles?
Who can remain still until the moment of action?
Observers of the Tao do not seek fulfillment.
Not seeking fulfillment, they are not swayed by desire for change.
