The Linux 6.11-rc5 kernel is already out as stable today, roughly a half-day ahead of time due to travels by Linus Torvalds.
Linus Torvalds shipped the Linux 6.11-rc5 kernel much earlier than he traditionally does due to ongoing travels with time changes. Torvalds explained in the [1]v6.11-rc5 announcement :
"So I normally do the releases on a Sunday early afternoon, but I'm in an unusual timezone, and that would have been almost a full day earlier than usual. So I delayed things to the point where it was at least Sunday back home, even if not even remotely afternoon.
Other than the timing, there's not a whole lot unusual here. The diffstat looks fairly flat, which means "mostly pretty small changes". There's a couple of bumps here and there, but nothing worrisome: the biggest of them is in fact just a selftest update. The bulk of the (non-selftest) patches are in drivers (networking and gpu dominating - as is tradition), with some filesystem updates (bcachefs, but also smb and erofs), and the rest being mostly core networking and some architecture updates."
Linus Torvalds this week had been in Hong Kong for the Open-Source Summit China conference. So Linux 6.11-rc5 is now available.
As a follow-up to the weekend [2]drama around the size of Bcachefs "fixes" , a revised pull request was honored ahead of v6.11-rc5. [3]This merge brings a reduced set of Bcachefs patches for the week. Just a variety of smaller fixes to this experimental CoW file-system.
Linux 6.11-rc5 also brings [4]a HID quirk fix for the ASUS ROG Ally X for those interested in that handheld gaming device.
[5]Linux 6.11 stable should be out by mid-September.
