Cable appears to be a stable equilibrium (Score:5, Interesting)
I happen to be old-ish, so I have seen this game play out before. And good God, does history rhyme! In the early 80s, when the parents of a friend got Cable, I was mesmerized. A million channels and no commercials! And it wasn't even that expensive. Then, as time wore on and we also eventually got cable a few things happened:
1. Commercials became common except for "premium" channels you paid extra for.
2. The price went up quickly because you started to pay for things (like sports programming) that you didn't care about.
So along came Netflix. For a shining moment there was loads of excellent programming available at reasonable cost. Then the imitators came along because everyone wanted their own service to set up a walled garden and get that sweet, sweet monthly subscriber vig. And at first it was great except, over a couple of years:
1. Commercials became common across services (unless you paid for a "premium" tier). And services you got for "free", such as Amazon Prime, began showing a lot of commercials. Youtube turns the screws on the remaining audience not using an ad blocker.
2. Price increases go nuts. Services raising prices yearly well beyond the price of inflation. In large part because of making everyone pay for expensive programming (e.g. sports) that not everyone cares about.
So we have reinvented cable! Yay?
When I was a broke grad student in the late 90s I stopped watching TV because I couldn't afford cable. It became a good habit and I didn't watch anything until a few years ago when I got a free trial of Apple TV. I don't watch much, but I do pay for Apple and Disney and I'm starting to feel like it may be time to walk away again (but I'll keep Disney for the kiddos).

While all of this is true, it is not unique to cable/streaming. It is literally every market.
Our current form of capitalism is entitlement to corporate profit, guaranteed enrichment of the wealthy at the expense of society. All the bad parts of a system of greed, no good parts from free markets. Yet the public doesn't realize they keep voting for this, instead they're excited to vote for their hatred of colored and trans people.

maybe true, but in fairness there isn't anything else to vote for: whatever you vote you are voting for your corporate overlords. that's actually why so many people voted for trump in the us, because they thought he was different. and he indeed is, but not in the way they expected. anyway this is a global phenomenon all over the west, more or less. it seems the democracy experiment has run its course. you might not even have to vote for much longer, the system will finally show its teeth.

Choice one: Is this the beginning of a new golden age of Television?
Choice 2: Or are they putting out the same, low quality stuff and when they DO manage to create a hit, do they cancel it after one season?
What am I thinking, of course, choice 2.

I'd generally agree with you, but not in the case of AppleTV. Their hit rate has been higher than most, and they haven't gone off cancelling things that people loved. For example, a recent survey said Apple's rate of a show being good, outstanding or exceptional was 50.8%, while Paramount's was 41%, Hulu's 40%, Max's 25%, Disney's 24%, Netflix's 20%, and Amazon's 14%. Their top hits have been:
- Ted Lasso
- Severance
- Silo
- Pluribus
- For All Mankind
- Slow Horses
- The Morning Show
- Murder Bot
- The Studio

I love a lot of the shows on Apple. They were my favorite streaming service, until I cancelled them because of the companys collaboration with Trump and his looting of our country. Cancelled Paramount + too. Like other people have said, read a book.

I still use my IPhone 13, you probably have a de-googled android. Everyone I know is stuck in the big tech ecosystem to some extent.

Apple TV has the worst bandwidth problems of any major streaming service. It also bugs out if it runs on anything other than a mac, which was probably done intentionally.

They've produced another billion dollars in new shows that we don't care about, and they are absolutely entitled to profit from it. Those are the rules, don't like it maybe you'll like deportation instead.
