GM Cutting Hundreds of Salaried IT Workers As It Trims Costs, Evaluates Needs

(Monday May 11, 2026 @05:00PM (BeauHD) from the sign-of-the-times dept.)

GM is [1]laying off about 500 to 600 salaried IT workers , mainly in Austin, Texas, and Warren, Michigan, as it restructures its technology organization and trims costs. "GM is transforming its Information Technology organization to better position the company for the future. As part of that work, we have made the difficult decision to eliminate certain roles globally. We are grateful for the contributions of the employees affected and are committed to supporting them through this transition," the automaker said in an emailed statement. CNBC reports:

> GM reported employing about 68,000 salaried workers globally as of the end of last year, including 47,000 white-collar employees in the U.S. Despite Monday's cuts, GM still is still hiring IT workers. The company has 82 open IT positions that include positions working in artificial intelligence, motorsports and autonomous vehicles, according to the [2]automaker's careers website .

In 2023, the share was 65%, and these workers reported a median annual salary of $123,600. Examples of these include jobs in systems analysis and programming, computer systems technical support, and data communications and networks."

You see, normies view computer jobs like picking tomatoes. They don't want those jobs so they think you shouldn't either

Keep in mind there are dozens of other visa and immigration programs that we all just kind of lump under H1B as people who are getting replaced by cheap foreign labor.

If H1B was the only high skilled worker program then it's only about 60,000 people a year and it wouldn't really have much effect. But it's one of dozens of programs to bring in cheap labor.

The frustrating thing is as I pointed out on another comment without influx of immigrants we're going to go into a massive recession just like Japa

Look we all know they're h1bs. GM didn't magically get less work to do in it just because they want to save money. There is a little bit of cutting back but most of that has already happened with the people in the EV division that got shit canned. So if they're firing people they are either shipping the jobs overseas which is tough to do because they've already shipped as many jobs overseas as they can or more likely they've got a batch of fresh work visas to replace Americans with.
