EBay Is Laying Off About 800 Workers, 6% of Global Workforce (bloomberg.com)

(Thursday February 26, 2026 @11:40AM (msmash) from the tussle-continues dept.)

EBay is [1]cutting about 800 jobs , or 6% of its full-time employees, saying the layoffs are needed to align its workforce with strategic priorities. From a report:

> "We are taking steps to reinvest across our business and align our structure with our strategic priorities, which will affect certain roles across our workforce," the San Jose, California-based company said early Thursday in a statement. "We are grateful for the contributions of the employees impacted and are committed to supporting them with care and respect."

>

> EBay will continue to hire in key areas. The cuts come a week after the company said it would acquire secondhand fashion marketplace Depop for about $1.2 billion in an effort to draw younger shoppers and after it reported robust quarterly results. Revenue increased 15% to $3 billion in the fourth quarter, surpassing analyst estimates.

I tried to sell and give away some stuff (car equipment) on ebay recently (I've had an account for over 25 years but rarely use it). After a week my 15 posts had number of cumulated views of 0. ZERO. How is that possible ?!? Apparently if you put a start price of 1$ or put up stuff for free, now they simply don't want to show your postings because they won't make enough money off of it I guess. If they allowed that then everyone would see those listings first, so all the scammers would do that. And don't think that just because ebay handles the money scamming isn't an issue.

Here's an example. There are sellers of what purports to be grey market cameras selling DSLRs for a few hundred under what Amazon sells them for. Now what happens is, after you buy the camera on eBay, they write to you and say, hey we've got it ready to go, but you know, the charger only works in Chinese outlets. If you want, w

In the first place, what does "reinvest across our business" even mean? And how is it relevant in an announcement about laying people off?

Secondly, "align our structure with our strategic priorities" is patronizing windbaggery. Just say "we're changing our business and some current jobs will no longer be required".

Third, don't be "committed" to supporting those laid off - just fucking well do it !

I'm sick of the disgusting, patronizing - there's that word again - language coming out of c-suites. If you're going to axe people, do it as kindly as possible, with as much support as possible when it comes to severance, references, job search assistance, etc. If you directed half the resources you currently expend on bloviating and virtue signalling toward helping those displaced, the world would be a better place for it. "align its workforce with strategic priorities" - didn't we just read the other day that Amazon was laying off what, 30k, for *exactly* the same alleged reasons?

So, revenue is down, and the CEO wants more ROI? How about we skip to the other story today, and let eBay employees create a chatbot clone of their CEO, and *replace* him with the chatbot?
