> "I cannot see any evidence of this postulated major influx of Chinese car manufacturers in Germany, either in the figures or on the roads -- and that is why we are facing up to the competition and not imposing any restrictions," German Environment Minister Carsten Schneider said at a Monday press conference. The decision is a major boon for affordable Chinese automakers like BYD that are steadily gaining ground in the European market,

> Germany's green-light for Chinese EVs stands in stark contrast to other nations' approaches. In the UK, subsidies introduced last year effectively excluded Chinese battery-powered vehicles, while France's so-called social leasing scheme includes similar restrictions. [...] Germany maintains strong diplomatic ties with China. German automakers are among the most significant players in China's automotive industry. Over the past years, China's policies -- including purchase subsidies and purchase tax reductions -- have not excluded models or automakers from specific countries. Whether German automakers like Volkswagen or American automakers like Tesla, all enjoy national-level purchase incentive policies in China on par with domestic automakers.

Wrong on so many levels (Score:2)
1. China is a frenemy of the West. These cars will have kill switches, and also send telemetry back to the mothership
2. China unfairly subsidises their EVs. A classic case of "predatory pricing". You State-subsidise an industry and then dominate. When all competition is dead, move onto the next industry. Rinse repeat.
3. China is a horrible dictatorship which will invade the sovereign nation of Taiwan soon
4. China culturally destroyed Tibet
5. Chinese EVs aren't made to the same environmental standards

Incorrect. The subsidies are to get people to pick EV's over fossil fuel cars. The EV industry doesn't need the subsidy, the customer does.
Once you cross a specific threshold, then you start dialing back the subsidy so certain companies (eg Tesla) are unable to dump unsold product, and companies like Chinese and Korean EV manufacturers are unable to put their garbage products next to better products and demand the same price.
