Obesity Jab Drug Fails To Slow Alzheimer's (bbc.com)

(Monday November 24, 2025 @05:40PM (msmash) from the PSA dept.)

Drug maker Novo Nordisk says semaglutide, the active ingredient for the weight loss jab Wegovy, [1]does not slow Alzheimer's -- despite initial hopes that it might help against dementia. From a report:

> Researchers began two large trials involving more than 3,800 people after reports the medicine was having an impact in the real world. But the studies showed the GLP-1 drug, which is already used to manage type 2 diabetes and obesity, made no difference compared to a dummy drug. The disappointing results are due to be presented at an Alzheimer's disease conference next month and are yet to be published in a peer-reviewed journal.

Wut? Where did you get vomit from? Do you... "think" that people on these drugs lose weight through *vomiting*? As opposed to, ya know, blunting appetite and slowing gastric emptying?

It's actually the most [1]common side effect [wegovy.com] of Wegovy. I don't like defending a troll, but that's actually one of the biggest problems people have with the drug. To the extent that many of the people that quit taking it attribute the nausea as the biggest reason outside of the cost.

The most common side effect I've seen reported is nausea. Sometimes that can lead to vomiting, but it doesn't usually.

Pedantic point, but accurate, my apologies.

I rarely get nauseous without vomiting (in my adult life, I think I was nauseous without vomiting once so far) so I directly correlate the two. I do know people who experience that more regularly, so again, my apologies.

Not sure why you think price has anything to do with it, and weight loss could very well have an impact, regardless of price and vomit.

Wegovy works by slowing down the entry of food into the intestines, it has a pronounced effect on blood sugar and insulin levels. But go ahead and believe you know more than researchers, you're a /. AC after all.

Semiglutide also has a dulling effect on taste buds. Many have reported their favorite foods taste terrible once they started on them.

So it also has the effect that foods responsible for weight gain are also now unpalatable so you'll just eat less in general, making you lose weight that way as well.

Judging from the commercials, weight loss from Wegovy is probably more from all the marching around town than the drug itself. :-)
