Brazil Proposes a New Type of Fund To Protect Tropical Forests

(Wednesday November 05, 2025 @11:44AM (msmash) from the green-for-green dept.)

Brazil is set to announce Thursday the establishment of a multibillion-dollar fund designed to [1]pay countries to keep their tropical forests standing . The Tropical Forest Forever Facility would deliver $4 billion per year to as many as 74 countries that maintain their forest cover. The fund requires $25 billion from governments and philanthropies to begin operations.

Private investors would contribute the remaining $100 billion. Brazil has committed $1 billion. Countries would receive around $4 per hectare of standing forest after using satellite imagery to verify forests remain in place. Nations with annual deforestation rates above 0.5% are ineligible for payouts. Indonesia, which has rapidly lost forests to palm-oil cultivation and mining, cannot participate. One-fifth of the payments are designated for forest communities. The World Bank is managing the fund.

A feel good story to scam and embezzle money from rich doners, Brazil holding the jungle hostage, " pay us monies or will burn the jungle down" in a sweet Mister Rogers sort of way

Brazil seems to be a net contributor to this. They already pay people to not deplete the rainforest domestically. The fact that it has enjoyed some success is why they are proposing making it an international effort.

shame if something was to happen to it! This has common sense written all over it - after all the UK for example used to be heavily forested and it seems hardly fair to make other countries freeze development at some arbitrary level/time. You just know this is just going to devolve into greenwashing and extortion though!

This is a serious plan to pay the state government to literally do nothing, and to value nature and habit, and to enforce this understanding into the future. This means the value of doing nothing is greater than the value of development which is only worthy of a short term valuation.

This is a serious plan for greenwashing. Brazil is allowing forest to be cut down primarily to benefit foreign investors, which means they could just not be doing that already.

I dread success. To have succeeded is to have finished one's business on
earth, like the male spider, who is killed by the female the moment he has
succeeded in his courtship. I like a state of continual becoming, with a
goal in front and not behind.
