An anonymous reader shares a report:

> Samsung Display president Lee Cheong has confirmed plans to [1]make foldable smartphone displays for a major American company , which is widely believed to be Apple. As reported in Chosun Biz, Cheong last week told journalists in Seoul that the company is accelerating preparations for mass production of OLED displays designed for foldable smartphones to be supplied to a "North American client." He declined to provide further information about the client, but it is widely expected to be Apple.

Maybe something actually new from Apple, next year? (Score:2)

Their gimmicks (transparency, the solution to a problem no one ever fucking had) aren't working anymore to drive sales.

At least they'll actually have something different next year, instead of the same 'ol revision of what they've been making the last 5 years (even if this 'new' thing has been done by everyone else for those last 5 years).

I thought their gimmick was to release a "thinner" version of the previous model while and ignoring that people want better battery life.

Except iphone have gotten thicker each year since iphone 6, upto now which brings us the thickest iphone in the 17 pro series. Other than the air which is the thinnest they have made and a new product.

Why do we expect anything other than an incremental increase capabilities? Should we expect anything other than "a little faster, with a slightly better camera"?

Something you'll probably use more than once?

Because it was Apple (and every other manufacturer, but mainly Apple due to they yearly cycle everyone else copies) that set those expectations, long ago.

Apple probably poured piles of R&D into developing their own folding tech, but now must admit Samsung won that research contest.

Although an alternative view is they think it's a passing fad and thus not worth their own R&D spending.

Not to support Apple, but this is super silly argument. Apple does not and never has made their own displays.

Apples iphone will be about the size of a blackberry (so pocketable) and when unfolded the size between a pro max and a ipad mini.

This solves the problem with the big screen phones which are much better* to use but awkward to carry.

I will be interested to see what they do.

I still wish they had went to a folded size between watch and half an iphone. Which opened to iphone size. This could be the apple pocket watch or similar.
