In a Hotter World, Some People Age Faster, Researchers Find (nytimes.com)

(Monday August 25, 2025 @05:40PM (msmash) from the ripple-effects dept.)

Living through extreme heat waves can [1]accelerate your rate of aging , according to research published Monday. From a report:

> Scientists analyzed 15 years' worth of health data from nearly 25,000 adults in Taiwan and found that two years of exposure to heat waves could speed up a person's so-called biological aging by eight to 12 extra days. It may not sound like a lot, but this number builds over time, said Cui Guo, an assistant professor at the University of Hong Kong who led the study, which was [2]published Monday in the journal Nature Climate Change .

>

> "This small number actually matters," she said. "This was a study of a two-year exposure, but we know heat waves have actually been occurring for decades." The research comes as human-induced climate change is making heat waves more intense and long-lasting. The West Coast of the United States is suffering from sweltering temperatures while Iran is experiencing searing heat. Record-breaking temperatures punished Europe, Japan and Korea earlier this month. France recently experienced its second heat wave of the summer, sparking a national debate over air-conditioning.

If you cared to listen to the actual people and not just uncritically soak up what right-wing media and alternative media tell you than you might come to realize this is and has always been a bad faith false choice.

We could be leading the world in renewable energy and producing more of it for less money with more jobs, factories and generally improved state of life but this lie that we have to choose between cleaner energy and economic prosperity was a blatant lie always.

Whenever issues of global warming come up, and nuclear fission is offered as part of the solution, then comes the immediate responses on how we should not use nuclear fission because nuclear fission is this or nuclear fission is that. Well, nuclear fission is as safe as wind and solar power, and produces less CO2 than either. I can provide sources: [1]https://ourworldindata.org/saf... [ourworldindata.org]

It's never not funny that you advocate this position but then on the other hand advocate for fission (a stance I agree with) but that is the source of power generation that necessitates the most government interaction. It reads very bad faith, almost like this pro-nuclear position is more of a convenient cudgel to resist climate change but act like you don't. A position sadly I have found all too common with nuclear advocacy but it makes sense, many of you tossed your lot with the Republicans.
