Bluesky Adds Trending Topics (theverge.com)

(Friday December 27, 2024 @10:30PM (BeauHD) from the looks-familiar dept.)

On Christmas Day, the social media app Bluesky [1]added a list of Trending topics to its mobile app, [2]allowing users to see which subjects are popular among its community . The Verge reports:

> The new feature can be found by selecting the search icon (the magnifying glass), which appears at the bottom of the screen on the mobile app and on the left sidebar on the web. Lists of Trending and Recommended subjects now appear below the search bar. Tap on any topic, and you will be able to access the associated posts. [...] According to the announcement, the new feature is "V1" (it is marked as a Beta on the app) and "we will be iterating with your feedback."

Other apps followed these steps: New features are added, an algorithm recommends you posts, adverts are now placed in your feed, ???, profit at the expense of making things worse to the users

It's an anti-feature. Unless you're a teenybopper or something.

I thought the whole point of BlueSky was to move away from centralized control and command structures. Trending topics lays a groundwork for more centralized or majority-controlled feeds. This feels like a backslide toward old social media.

Your complaint about adding the trend feature is now trending on BlueSky.
