Tech employees demand their leaders take a stand against ICE

(2026/01/26)

More than 400 tech workers have urged their CEOs to "call the White House and demand ICE leave our cities" after masked federal agents shot and killed Alex Pretti over the weekend and the world's richest and most powerful chief executives remained silent.

In October, when President Trump threatened to send federal law enforcement to San Francisco, tech leaders reportedly called the White House and Trump reversed course, telling reporters that [1]phone calls from Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang and Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff had changed his mind.

Meanwhile, US Immigration and Customs Enforcement and National Guard troops were deployed to other cities, including Portland, Los Angeles, Chicago, and Minneapolis, where federal agents have now shot and killed two people, [2]Pretti and [3]Renee Good , this month.

[4]

The tech industry's C-suite has yet to publicly speak out against these recent fatal shootings involving federal agents - or the larger dismantling of democracy and the international order under the Trump administration - but their employees are, with hundreds of workers from Amazon, Apple, Google, Meta, Microsoft, Nvidia, Salesforce, and many, many other companies demanding ICE leave American cities.

[5]

[6]

"This cannot continue, and we know the tech industry can make a difference," according to the [7]ICEout tech petition that calls on CEOs to do three things:

Call the White House and demand that ICE leave our cities.

Cancel all company contracts with ICE.

Speak out publicly against ICE's violence.

As of mid-Monday, about 450 tech employees had signed the letter.

The Register contacted 16 companies (Amazon, Apple, Cisco, Cloudflare, Google, IBM, Lyft, Intel, Meta, Microsoft, Nvidia, Okta, OpenAI, PayPal, Salesforce, and Stripe) whose employees signed their support for the ICEout efforts and asked if their CEOs planned to take any of the above actions.

None of them immediately responded to our inquiries.

On Sunday, [12]more than 60 CEOs of large Minnesota-based companies, including 3M, Best Buy, General Mills, Target, and UnitedHealth, [13]signed an open letter "calling for an immediate deescalation of tensions and for state, local and federal officials to work together to find real solutions." ®

CSuite are doing the right thing

Anonymous Coward

If I were a CSuite leader In would say and do nothing for several reasons.

Bullying your politics onto another is Fascism.

CSuite Leaders are not politicians.

A tiny minority of extremist are not tue voice of the majority.

The left wing extremists are becoming violent, again this is fascism.

If people dont lile current politics then they should demonstrate peacefully and leave others alone.

The further the push the harder they will fall.

They seem to want anarchy, they will soon learn that anarchists always pay the highest price and lose the most. They do not represent the majority, they are children that have yet tilo learn that life is now about what you want but about living with what you merited through hard work.

This is not Iran, there are no dictators here. They arw free to live peacefully.

Politics is the domain of the governed, not the politicians.

Take your monarchy, dictator, demagogue, authority crap and get on your bike.

Re: CSuite are doing the right thing

Precisely, what has business got to do with it?

Re: CSuite are doing the right thing

It's tech, many of your workers may not fit the skin tone Aryan racial purity as represented by a typical ICE recruit

Having your workers shot by ICE could negatively affect their key performance metrics in the current reporting cycle

Re: CSuite are doing the right thing

that one in the corner

So you believe that businesses are not governed?

That the people within businesses, from the janitor to the CEO are not governed and are not to have a political voice?

There are arguments about the excess use of business assets (e.g. brown envelopes) in politics, but to go do far as to believe they are to be excluded entirely - well, not very democratic.

Re: CSuite are doing the right thing

HausWolf

I see you live up to the coward part anyways.

Re: CSuite are doing the right thing

Anonymous Coward

I would say no simply because a CEO and by extension the business should be apolitical, you don't start a business as a gateway into politics, you start a business because you're passionate about what your business does...

What isn't terrible for business though is downsizing, that usually has a net positive effect on share prices...so people bringing politics into the office and jumping up and down makes it much easier to pick names for layoffs...doesn't matter which way they swing, it's a free layoff.

CEOs who turn up at political events with implicit support for the regime, who donate to those regimes, who supply political activities are political, like it or not.

Hmm. Imagine if less people in 1930s Germany had your mindset. Imagine instead of keeping their heads down, enough people stood up and said: NO.

The view from across the pond is that the USA is increasingly a fascist society. The president was found by a jury to have carried out a sexual assault. The same man cheered on and encouraged an attack on the legislature by all kinds of right wing yobbos - frequently recruited from the 'Christian' nutjob fraternity.

The most extremists I see in the USA are the right wing hate mob.

Have a look at how the WP in Germany actually started. It was mostly due to the Bolsheviks uprising, they countered and the rest is history.

The end result was one of the worst things humanity has ever seen, only the communists have done worse, Stalin, Mao Zedung.. So before the extremists on the left keep pushing, maybe, just maybe, they need to think, have a look back into history att the dire consequences that they are likely to achieve because a tiny minority wanted to bully around their ideologies.

Ask yourself this question: What are their actual politics, what do they actually have to offer by means of a better life, what do they actually want to change, if you look objectively, they are fighting for poor ideologies based on unfulfillable dreams that have failed time and time again.

That's some history re-writing you are doing there. Next you'll be telling me that slavery was good for people because they were given bowls of food.

Israeli agents who train ICE in these thug tactics and conduct sex trafficking to get close to powerful people are bad people. Like the OP.

Androgynous Cupboard

They haven’t had any training from anyone. They’ve been given a gun, body armour and a mask and told they can do whatever the fuck they want.

Delusion

elsergiovolador

Those employees are delusional.

They still think they live in a Western democracy, but reality is now different and is going to hit them hard.

In authoritarian regime, the last thing company wants to do is get on the radar of government.

Government has all tools available to shut such company down.

The C Suite is not going to speak up, they like their millions or billions very much.

And what is employee going to do... quit? Good luck in this broken economy.

Re: Delusion

Why should they speak out about someone else's ideologies ?

Mussolini quote

Wang Cores

The company IS the government.

BasicReality

That's about 450 people who should be searching for new jobs. And I hope companies will step up to support ICE and enforcing the law.

Throatwarbler Mangrove

"Supporting ICE" and "enforcing the law" are two different things. Which do you want?

Anonymous Coward

The one thing they don't want is a genuine, good faith discussion. "BasicReality" is a right-wing troll account and has always been so from their very first post a couple of years or so back.

(I spotted this when they first appeared at a time there was a mysterious number of new accounts with right-wing leanings out of the gate. At least, I *think* that was their first post, as it's clear the mods were already removing some even then, and the one I had bookmarked has now been removed too. IIRC they were a bit more extreme and pushing things back then- nowadays I think they've toned it down just enough to fly under the mod radar).

VoiceOfTruth

Law isn't everything. It is people with your attitude that prolonged slavery for so long in the USA. Well it's the law.

Dumb move

Marty McFly

This is a good way to identify which employees have too much free time on their hands. Get back to work. They should organize a protest on their own time.

The tech company employees are paid to do the things that Meta, Apple, Google, etc want them to do. They are not paid to go cube-to-cube and gather signatures. In the tech world there is always a RIF coming. If I was a direct supervisor I would make note and keep those names handy the next time I am told to cut headcount.

Someone will probably say that is unfair. Managers have to determine some way to stack rank their staff. Don't be the person using company time to engage in political activity, and then they won't be on the short list.

Taking a lunch break is STEALING from the company!

Anonymous Coward

The CEOs are all paragons of abject cowardice.

Wang Cores

They love this shit actually. They're all in for having these goons blasting USians who complain about their datacenters and other vanity projects. Same as Chile 1973.

It's national regeneration into a mafia state.

Evaluator

Who would even suggest that any CEO should act out or speak out against law enforcement? Those who prefer anarchy can move to Nigeria, let us know how it goes.

VoiceOfTruth

I expect you would have shit your undergarments if 'law enforcement' actually shot the insurrectionists.

Self-control mode is on.

Tron

I'm amazed by the self-control of the locals in Minneapolis. Can you imagine if this happened in Paris.

In a country with so many guns, they have remained peaceful.

For anyone who considers the only good fascist to be a dead one, the temptation to have a go must be considerable, with so many targets on your doorstep, even knowing that Trump may be hoping for this to happen, so he can go the full martial law.

Trump only listens to about half a dozen billionaires and busty women with 80s hair, so Minneapolis CEOs would just be painting targets on their backs. I expect, like most of the planet, they are waiting, hoping someone pops off the demented orange nutjob, or the Republicans grow a pair and get rid of him, before he flips on Putin and starts WWIII.

Why are there no problems with ICE...

Anonymous Coward

...in red states?

Just sayin'

Re: Why are there no problems with ICE...

Wang Cores

Because they don't go door to door there in hopes of creating a problem. Don't worry it will happen. And I expect you will have no dignity then too.

Re: Why are there no problems with ICE...

Anonymous Coward

Better dead than red!

Re: Why are there no problems with ICE...

Or maybe because ICE don't encounter people who coordinate organized resistance on Signal groups to disrupt arrests, in red states?

Now I understand the meaning of "THE MOD SQUAD"!
