Bitfinex crypto thief who was serving five years thanks Trump for early release

(2026/01/02)

Ilya Lichtenstein, who pleaded guilty to money-laundering charges tied to the 2016 theft of about 120,000 bitcoins from the Bitfinex exchange and was sentenced to five years in prison, has been released after roughly 14 months in the slammer.

"Thanks to President Trump's First Step Act, I have been released from prison early," Lichtenstein [1]said in a late Thursday post on X.

"I remain committed to making a positive impact in cybersecurity as soon as I can," he continued. "To the supporters, thank you for everything. To the haters, I look forward to proving you wrong."

Trump signed the prison-reform [3]First Step Act into law during his first term in 2018. A White House official confirmed Lichtenstein's early release to The Register , noting that he served "significant time on his sentence" and has been placed on home confinement, "consistent with statute and Bureau of Prisons policies."

In a subsequent Xeet and selfie, Lichtenstein's wife Heather Morgan (aka Razzlekhan), who also pleaded guilty to helping launder the stolen crypto and received an early release from her 18-month sentence, [5]called her husband's release "the best New Years present I could get."

While Lichtenstein got [12]five years behind bars for his crimes, Morgan received a lighter sentence and only spent about nine months in the clink, [13]thanking "Papa Trump" in a bathtub video upon her early release.

I have come to ask you to do a service for me !!!

Anonymous Coward

"Someday, and that day may never come, I will call upon you to do a service for me."

All these people who Herr Trump is releasing from prison after being found guilty of crimes (usually money related) will be thanking Herr Trump until they get the early morning visit from his enforcers letting his new 'Friends' know that Herr Trump has decided to ask them for a service in return.

Much like the mafia the 'service' is something that you will not be able to refuse ... unless you are particularly good at swimming in cement or breathing under water for hours at a time !!!

Each day I read of yet more people (criminals) who Herr Trump has decided need to be free ... and everyday I feel more and more safe !!!

Oh what a Golden Age we are living through ... run into the streets and give thanks to your POTUS for his munificence to all ... (Actually, mainly rich and somewhat criminal people).

:)

Be willing to bet any amount of money he's already provided Trump a "service", in the form of giving him some of the bitcoin he stole. The feds only recovered part of the stolen haul so even after their bribe they'll be set for life. Criminals love criminals which is why Trump loves pardoning grifters, conmen and common thieves like himself.
