Rather than focusing only on what users were doing with Copilot, Microsoft also looked at how and when they did it. The findings give an insight into how AI and assistants like Copilot are seeping into everyday life, according to Microsoft.
Mobile users tended to ask Copilot health questions throughout the day, while desktop users were all business during working hours. Programming queries spiked on weekdays while chats about gaming rose over the weekend. Philosophical questions tended to increase at night.
[1]
Researchers said: "These patterns paint a picture of rapid and deep social integration. Users have tacitly agreed to weave AI into the fabric of their daily existence, turning to it for code reviews at 10 am and existential clarity at 2 am."

The idea of a user turning to Copilot, or any chatbot, for "existential clarity" is vaguely disturbing, although considering recent [4]reports documenting the rise in the technology's use (alongside [5]potential risks to mental health ), it's not altogether surprising.

A chatbot might also not be the right place to go for advice on health matters, though it is not a million miles from a consultation with Dr Google, just with a more conversational face.
Another finding is the increase in topics not directly related to technical matters. Productivity-focused conversations dominated in January, but by September, other areas, including "society, culture, and history," had increased prevalence.
"This likely reflects a dual dynamic," noted the researchers. "The broadening of habits among existing users, and the democratization of the user base as mainstream adopters – who may have less technical priorities than the developer-heavy cohort of early January – joined the platform."
[10]
Copilot remains some way behind the leaders in terms of AI chatbot market share. The most recent [11]Statcounter figures show that ChatGPT accounted for more than 80 percent of the market, while Copilot trailed at just over 3 percent.
However, the finding that the chatbot is slipping into everyday life indicates a broader trend: AI assistants are moving inexorably from research tools to companions for the wider population. ®

Oh please, let me make on, last time was over three million years ago...
"Genuine People Personality"
Ah so you’re a waffle man!
Crapilot
Crapilot, crapilot on my laptop, who’s the fairest of them all?
I mean, who could have predicted that?
Personal experience: Confirmed!
Not me personally used though, but some of my relatives dared to send me an "AI Answer" as screenshot in an argument. They lost the argument. Now we have less contact / more distance, and that is fine.
Re: Personal experience: Confirmed!
"They lost the argument."
Do they know this?
Not here they ain't
We have banned all AI from our desktop/laptop machines. We have one system (on its own subnet) that can access AI systems for things like generating images.
If you wonder why then think what will happen if the AI decides that the formula for a new drug is wrong and changes it...
We have ditched Office 365 for LibreOffice. If we could ditch Windows we would in a flash.
Re: Not here they ain't
> if the AI decides that the formula for a new drug is wrong and changes it.
a whole new meaning to "hallucinatory drug"?
The most frequently asked question was...
"How do I remove Copilot from Windows?"
Also 37.5 million conversations in a world with > 7 billion people and over a course of several month, and "it's seeping into everyday life"? Really?
Re: The most frequently asked question was...
Microsoft: Look at Copilot, it's relevant too! Please!
Re: The most frequently asked question was...
I wondered about "seeping". Is it the best verb? "Corroding" might fit. Any oher options?
F*** OFF!
Gemini on my phone & Tablet, Copilot on my laptop and desktop, and every single day one or the other of them gets told to F*** OFF after asking if they could help with what I am doing. I don't have the option or currently want to use Linux so please don't start preaching that again. What I would like would be to be able to 100% delete all such "AI" garbage from my devices so I don't have to waste my time every day telling glorified F***ING CLIPPYs to F*** OFF!!! Roll on retirement day when I can wipe everything and go Linux, although knowing my luck by then that will also come with a nice helpful "AI" that want's to be my friend. Please let the sodding bubble burst soon so we can get shot of all this crap we are being force-fed. If you love "AI" then good for you. I don't want it and I RESENT having it constantly pushed at me because some marketing A-HOLE thought it would be a good idea.
It's worse than you thought
" The idea of a user turning to Copilot, or any chatbot, for "existential clarity" is vaguely disturbing"
Or rather, dead scary, I'd say. Not only is replacing human empathy with the output of a mindless machine a very bad idea, but supporting (nay, definitely driving) a culture in which folks are so deeply worried all the time that they have to ask existential questions at 2AM undermines human resilience. Once that's lost, we're just puppets in the dirty hands of the technocracy.
Re: It's worse than you thought
"are so deeply worried all the time that they have to ask existential questions at 2AM"
Deeply worried or drunk but missing their mates after closing time?
My experience of chatbots ...
.. could be compared with ... arguing with a truculent 3 year old, holding a script of wind-up phrases
"...chatbots seeping into everyday life"
"...chatbots seeping into everyday life"?
Maybe "...chatbots being forced into everyday life," is closer to the truth.
