Apple reportedly peels away some sales staff in small round of layoffs

(2025/11/25)

Apple, which unlike its Big Tech peers has not made substantial job cuts, is reportedly in the process of eliminating several dozen positions in its sales organization.

Sales staff focused on enterprise, government, and academic accounts are expected to be let go, according to [1]Bloomberg .

Apple did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

California's Employment Development Department did not immediately respond to a request to say whether Apple has notified the agency under the state's Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act (WARN).

[3]

[4]

Last year, Apple [5]cut an estimated 600 positions , mostly those working on the company's canceled self-driving car gambit. The layoffs were accompanied by WARN disclosures.

But these latest cuts may not be significant enough to prompt a compliance filing. California's [6]reporting requirement kicks in when an employer with more than 75 employees lays off 50 or more workers in a 30 day period.

[7]

As of September 27, 2025, the iBiz had [8]about 166,000 full-time employees , up from 164,000 as of September 28, 2024.

Apple told Bloomberg: "To connect with even more customers, we are making some changes in our sales team that affect a small number of roles."

How the company expects to serve more customers with fewer staff wasn't addressed. But one potential outcome is more opportunities for third-party resellers.

The cuts don't appear to be motivated by revenue concerns. In October, Apple [13]reported Q4 2025 revenue of $102.5 billion, up eight percent year over year, and CEO Tim Cook projected [14]revenue growth of 10-12 percent for its December quarter.

Apple, however, is increasing the amount of money it plans to spend on AI infrastructure. During the company's Q4 2025 earnings call for investors, CFO Kevan Parekh [15]said the company is "significantly increasing our investments in AI while continuing to invest in our product roadmap. For the December quarter, we expect operating expenses to be between $18.1 billion and $18.5 billion."

[16]

In its [17]Q4 2025 financial statement [PDF], Apple's operating expenses totaled $15.9 billion. Perhaps the extra $2.2-$2.6 billion convinced Apple to reduce costs elsewhere.

In 2025 so far, about 114,000 workers have lost their jobs at tech companies, according to [18]Layoffs.fyi . That figure was about 153,000 for the entirety of 2024.

The Financial Times recently [19]reported that Apple has stepped up its succession planning, in case CEO Tim Cook steps down as soon as next year. John Ternus, SVP of hardware engineering, is said to be the leading candidate to take the Big Chair. Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman has [20]characterized the report as premature. ®
